Edmond, Okla. -- Playing in arguably their toughest tournament of the year, the Augustana men's and women's tennis teams had a solid performances at the ITA Regionals this weekend in Oklahoma City. Played in the Oklahoma City Tennis Center and hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma, more than 100 student-athletes played throughout the four-day event.
Women's Recap:
The Augustana women's tennis team, owners of nine straight NSIC regular-season titles, showed just how talented they are this weekend at the ITA regionals. In flight 'B' doubles, a pair of sophomores,
Grace Goble and
Anca Rusu, claimed the flight title with a 8-1 win over a pair from Harding University.
In flight 'A' singles, Augustana's
Kornelia Staniszewska was not only the defending champion, but also came in ranked number one in the flight. Although Staniszewska was able to pick up an opening-round win, she ultimately fell in the round of 16 to Kiara Vickov of Southwest Baptist, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0.
The Vikings
Annika Teske played in the flight 'B' singles where she advanced to the semifinals with three wins on the weekend, including a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 over Clair Neil (UN-Kearney) in the quarterfinals. However, Teska's weekend came up short with a quarterfinal loss.
Augustana head coach
Marc Kurtz was proud of his teams performance and ability to stack up with some of the nations best. "It was a great tournament," Kurtz said, "I'm proud of our teams showing and how well we represented Augustana, the NSIC, and the tennis in our region. I'm already looking forward to our next event." The Vikings fall season is now concluded, and they will start conference play in the spring of 2019.

The Augustana men's team also played well this weekend in Oklahoma City, and continues to improve each time they step on the court. In flight 'A' singles, the Vikings
Logan Barr came in ranked 32nd, but the Sioux Falls native dropped his opening round match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to Raul Dicu of Washburn (KS) University. Augustana's
North Knewtson also lost his first match in flight 'A', 6-3, 6-4.
In flight 'A' doubles, Barr, along with Senior
Joe Sawatzke battled, but ultimately came up short and lost 9-8 to a duo from Lindenwood (MO) University. Knewtson and teammate Austin VanderWeide also dropped their first match of the ITA event, 8-4, to a pair from Southwest Baptist.
Kurtz was also proud of the men's performance, and is looking forward to his groups ability to improve during the spring. "This is the men's first and only action in the fall, and I thought they played well," Kurtz said, "They'll be ready as the spring season comes around in 2019."
