Augustana Men's Tennis Looks Forward to Starting Spring Season

The Vikings open up play this weekend in Nebraska

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Following a single-match season in the fall 2018, the Augustana men's tennis team is ready to get their 2019 spring campaign in full swing. Playing in Grand Island, Nebraska, Augustana will take on Rockhurst (IL) at 10 a.m. on Saturday and follow-up with Hasting (Neb.) on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Augustana men's tennis team, without a freshman on the roster, boasts experience that could give them an upper hand on their opponents and the season gears up. The men's team is led by seniors Austin Vanderweide and Joe Sawatzke, followed up by three juniors and two sophomores.

Vanderweide finished last season 8-6 in singles, while Sawatzke ended the season 7-9. The two teamed up for doubles and concluded the season 7-7.

Junior Charlie Adkins went 11-5 in No. 1 singles and went 8-7 in No. 1 doubles with Junior Logan Barr, who finished the team 8-9 in No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

Sophomores North Knewton and Eden Mrozek will also look to make an impact in their second year with the program.

Last season, the Vikings finished 7-9 and graduated one senior, Zach Adkins, who finished his career with a 37-24 singles record.

Earlier this year, the Viking started off the season at the ITA Central Regional. Augustana played well but didn't see any student-athletes advance to the finals.

With men's tennis not being an NSIC-sanctioned sport, the team has to get creative in their scheduling as they plan to match up against the likes of Mount Marty, Gustavus, the University of North Dakota, and Northwest Missouri.

Following their season-opening road trip, Augustana returns to Sioux Falls to welcome in Mount Marty on Friday, Feb. 8. The Vikings and Lancers start at 6:30 at the Greatlife Woodlake Athletic Club.
