SIOUX FALLS, S. D. – The Augustana football team plays its final road game of the regular season Saturday at Winona State. Kickoff from Winona, Minnesota, is slated for 1 p.m.
Â
The Game
The Augustana football team continues to fight for postseason possibilities, ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA Division II Super Region Four ranking. Winona State, holding an identical 7-2 record as the Vikings, is No. 9 in the same poll. The top seven teams from each region earn a spot in the D2 playoffs.
Â
Augustana is looking to push its win streak to five games, which would match its longest such streak since 2015, while Winona State enters riding a five-game win streak of its own.
Â
The Warriors
Winona State is 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC South Division. The two losses were to Sioux Falls in week two and Minnesota State in week four. Since then, the Warriors have rattled off five-straight victories including last week's rout of Southwest Minnesota State, 41-13.
Â
In that game, WSU completed 14 passes for 276 yards (split between Owen Burke and John Rumpza). Sam Santiago-Lloyd led the rushing attack with 140 yards and two touchdowns. He averaged 6.4 yards per carry. Defensively, WSU got to the SMSU quarterback seven times, including two sacks from Michael Gomez. Nick Pridgeon was named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 12 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.
Â
The Vikings
Last week, the Vikings had their first fourth-quarter comeback of the season, overcoming a six-point deficit on their final drive to top Concordia-St. Paul 21-20. True freshman
Jarod Epperson scored his second rushing touchdown of the game on a two-yard scamper while
Luis Guarita's point-after attempt sealed the victory.
Â
Kyle Saddler threw for 274 yards and no interceptions while
Nickel Meyers had his first 100-yard receiving game of the season. Meyers totaled eight receptions for 103 yards.
T.J. Liggett tallied 10 tackles, nine solo and 2.5 tackles for loss.
Luke Fritsch tallied a pair of interceptions as part of a Viking defense that continues to dominate in takeaways, now at 26 for the season.
Â
For the season, Saddler leads the NSIC with 221.9 yards per game while Epperson is sixth in the league with 71 yards per game. Liggett is in the top-10 of the NSIC with 7.7 tackles per game.
Â
Who to Watch For
Luis Guarita continues his dominance in the kicking game for the Vikings, ranking second nationally with his 92.3 field goal percentage. He has made 13 field goals this season and is chasing the school record of 16 made in a single season. He ranks fifth in the NSIC with 7.6 points per game.
Â
One Last Thing
The NSIC has four teams listed in the top-10 of the Super Region Four ranking. Minnesota State is ranked No. 2, then the Vikings follow at No. 7 with Sioux Falls at No. 8 and Winona State at No. 9. Of the rankings, Minnesota State and Sioux Falls clash on Saturday, just like the Vikings and Warriors do.
