BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- For the first time in her career, Augustana women's tennis student-athlete
Laura Arce Vieyra, a freshman from Mexico City, Mexico, has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Athlete of the Week.
Arce Vieyra is now the second Viking to win the honor as last week Kornelia Staniszewska won the honor as well.
The freshman finished the weekend 2-0 in both No. 2 Singles and No. 1 Doubles play. On Saturday she defeated Kelsey Lajom (U-Mary) 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 Singles. Arce Vieyra teamed up with Staniszewska to defeat Tasha Dembo and Kelsey Lajom (U-Mary) 6-1 in No. 1 Doubles.
On Sunday, Arce Vieyra kept her undefeated streak alive with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lorissa Yuen (MSU Moorhead) and teamed up with Staniszewska to defeat Julia Geske and Olivia Keelin (MSU Moorhead) 6-1 in No. 1 Doubles.
The Mexico City native is now 4-0 in No. 2 Singles, 3-0 in No. 1 Doubles and 1-0 in No. 2 Doubles.
As a team, Augustana (4-0, 2-0 NSIC) swept the weekend play 7-0 over U-Mary and 7-0 over MSU Moorhead to win its 100th straight NSIC match dating back to the 2009 season. The Vikings are ranked No. 5 in the ITA Central Region rankings.
The Vikings look to continue their conference win streak this weekend in Bemidji, Minn. against Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State.
