Augustana Men's and Women's Tennis Finish Up Play In Nebraska

Women win 7-0, men fall 5-2

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- The Augustana men and women's tennis team finished up play in Nebraska on Sunday afternoon. The women defeated Nebraska-Kearney 7-0 to sweep weekend play (2-0, 0-0 NSIC), and the men battled but ultimately fell 5-2 to Hastings which dropped them to 0-2 on the season.

Women's Recap:
In a matchup of central region ranked opponents, No. 5 Augustana dominated No. 7 Nebraska-Kearney in Grand Island, Neb. on Sunday. The Vikings won every single match in the singles and doubles competition.

Starting in singles competition, Kornelia Staniszewska extended her regular season win-streak to 20 matches. Staniszewska took down Vasilisa Polunova 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Freshman Laura Arce Vieyra defeated Zhanel Turarbek 7-6, 7-5 in No. 2 singles, Taylor Jackson defeated Sherry Sun 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 in No. 3 singles and Grace Goble took down Fidan Ibrahimova 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.

Rounding out singles play was juniors Anca Rusu and Annika Teske. Rusu earned her first singles win of the season with a win over Claire Neil 6-4, 6-4 and Teske got her second singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Pranathi Gannavaram.

In doubles action, the Vikings saw similar success and picked up three wins. Starting with No. 1 doubles, Staniszewska and Rusu took down Polunova and Gannavaram 6-4, Jackson and Arce Vieyra beat Sun and Neil 4-3 in No. 2 doubles and Goble and Teske defeated Turarbek and Lili Fattig 6-2 in No. 3 doubles.

After not being able to pick up a singles win in yesterdays match, the Viking men's team was able to pick up back-to-back singles wins in No. 4 and No. 5 singles competition on Sunday. Austin VanDerWeide defeated Jakson Stoutamire 7-6, 6-1 to pick up his first win of the season while North Knewtson took down Illijah Bailey 6-4, 7-6 to also pick up his first win of the season.

In doubles play senior VanDerWeide and sophomore Knewtson defeated Carter Mason and Brandon Lovato 6-4 to secure their second doubles win of the season.

The women now start up NSIC play against U-Mary when they travel to Bismarck on Saturday at 9 a.m. and will finish up the weekend in Bismarck against MSU Moorhead on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The men host a pair of teams in Mount Marty College on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Morningside College on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the GreatLife Woodlake Athletic Club in Sioux Falls.
