Viking Women Look For Their 100th Straight Conference Win

Men host Mount Marty and Morningside

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana men's and women's tennis teams return to action this weekend, beginning on Friday, Feb. 6. The men host Mount Marty at 7 p.m. on Friday and Morningside at 6 p.m. on Saturday with both matches at the GreatLife Woodlake Athletic Club in Sioux Falls.

The women travel to Bismarck, N.D. to open up conference play against U-Mary on Saturday at 9 a.m. and MSU Moorhead at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Women
The Viking women's team (2-0, 0-0 NSIC) have won 99 straight NSIC matches dating back to the 2009 season and look to capture 100 straight matches this weekend.

Last weekend the women swept the competition defeating Rockhurst, 6-1 and taking down Central Region No. 7 Nebraska-Kearney 7-0. The Vikings are ranked No. 5 in the ITA Central Region rankings.

On Sunday, Kornelia Staniszewska extended her regular season win-streak to 20 matches. Staniszewska took down Vasilisa Polunova 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Freshman Laura Arce Vieyra defeated Zhanel Turarbek 7-6, 7-5 in No. 2 singles, Taylor Jackson defeated Sherry Sun 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 in No. 3 singles and Grace Goble took down Fidan Ibrahimova 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.

In doubles play against Nebraska-Kearney, Staniszewska and Rusu took down Polunova and Gannavaram 6-4, Jackson and Arce Vieyra beat Sun and Neil 4-3 in No. 2 doubles and Goble and Teske defeated Turarbek and Lili Fattig 6-2 in No. 3 doubles.

Scouting U-Mary (0-0, 0-0 NSIC)
U-Mary takes the court for the first time this season on Saturday. The Marauders are led by Tasha Dembo, the sophomore went 7-2 in singles last season and earned All-NSIC tennis singles second team in her freshman year. Danielle Wolf, 1-6 record in singles, is the only upperclassmen on the team for U-Mary.

The Marauders lost to Augustana 9-0 during the regular season and 5-0 in the conference tournament last year.

Scouting MSU Moorhead (1-0, 0-0 NSIC)
MSU Moorhead defeated Concordia College last time out 7-0 to move to 1-0 on the season. The Dragons did not lose a set in singles and allowed only three games in three doubles matches. MSU Moorhead is led by sophomore Julia Geske. Geske defeated Jenna Forkell 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles last weekend and teamed up with Olivia Keelin for an 8-0 win over Ivy Mattson and Forkell at No. 1 doubles.

Men
The Viking men (0-2) host their first matches of the season when Mount Marty and Morningside come to town. 

Last weekend the Viking men dropped a pair of matches to Rockhurst, 6-1, and Hastings, 5-2. The men were led by Austin VanDerWeide.The senior defeated Jakson Stoutamire 7-6, 6-1 in No. 4 singles to pick up his first win of the season. In No. 5 singles North Knewtson took down Illijah Bailey 6-4, 7-6 to also pick up his first win of the season.

In doubles play the Watertown, S.D. native, VanDerWeide and sophomore Knewtson defeated Carter Mason and Brandon Lovato 6-4 to secure their second doubles win of the season.

Scouting Mount Marty:
The Lancers start the season at Augustana. Last year Mount Marty went 0-7 on the season. This will be the first meeting between the two teams.

Scouting Morningside:
The Mustangs will be on the courts for the first time this year. 

Last year Morningside fell to Augustana 9-0 and finished the year at 5-15 and 2-3 in the GPAC.
