Viking Women Pick Up Their 100th Straight Conference Win

Men sweep weekend play

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 The Augustana men's and women's tennis teams were back in action on Saturday afternoon. The women defeated U-Mary 7-0 to win their 100th straight conference match dating back to the 2009 season. The men finished up a pair of home matches at the GreatLIFE Woodlake Athletic Club defeating Morningside 7-0 to sweep the weekend's play.

Women
The Viking women (3-0, 1-0 NSIC) left nothing to chance on Saturday as they went on to win every single match in singles and doubles competition.

Starting in singles play with the reigning NSIC Player of the Year, Kornelia Staniszewska extended her regular season win streak to 21 matches. Staniszewska took down Tasha Dembo 6-2, 7-5 in No. 1 singles.

Freshman Laura Arce Vieyra defeated Kelsey Lajom 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 singles, Taylor Jackson defeated Jamie Stoppler 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 singles and Grace Goble took down Danielle Wolf 6-2, 6-1.

Rounding out the singles action for the Vikings was juniors Anca Rusu and Annika Teske. Rusu took control in No. 5 singles from the start and never looked back defeating Kali Askvig 6-0, 6-1 while Teske dominated Julie Donnelly 6-0, 6-0 in No. 6 singles.

In doubles action, Staniszewska teamed up with Arce Vieyra for the second time this season and took down Dembo and Lajom 6-1 to remain undefeated in both singles and doubles action. Arce Vieyra also remains undefeated on the season in both singles and doubles play.

Jackson and Rusu defeated Wolf and Askvig in No. 2 doubles, 6-2 and Goble and Teske dominated Donnelly and Stoppler 6-0. Goble and Teske remain undefeated in both singles and doubles play while Jackson and Rusu move to 2-1 in doubles play.



Men
The men finished up a pair of home matches at the GreatLIFE Woodlake Athletic Club on Saturday defeating Morningside 7-0. The Vikings swept the weekend's play and get back to .500 (2-2) after dropping their first two matches of the season.

Starting the day off was Logan Barr and Joe Sawatzke taking down Samuel Castro and Jesus Angel Sanz 6-2 in No. 1 doubles action. Over on court two, Frank Kelly and Eden Mrozek defeated Bernardo Cadario and Jory Opp 6-1 and North Knewtson and Austin VanDerWeide dominated Max Prochaska and Garrett Seamans 6-1.

Up next on the courts was singles competition and the Vikings duplicated their success from doubles picking up six wins. In No. 1 singles Barr defeated Cadario 6-3, 6-0, in No. 2 singles Sawatzke defeated Castro 6-2, 6-0. On court three VanDerWeide dominated Angel Sanz 6-2, 6-0 and in No. 4 singles Mrozek defeated Prochaska 6-1, 6-1.

Rounding out the day's action on the court was Knewtson and Kelly. Knewtson picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Opp while Kelly secured a 6-1, 6-1 win over Seamans.

The women finish up action in Bismarck tomorrow at 9 a.m. when they face off MSU Moorhead.

The men travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Bethel at 1 p.m. and Gustavus at 6 p.m. with both matches on Saturday, Feb. 16.
