Sunday Sweep: Viking Softball Wins Two in Florida

Augustana moves to 5-1 on the road trip

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- With just over a 12-hour turnaround between games, the Augustana softball team showed no signs of fatigue in a two-game sweep on Sunday morning in Florida. The Vikings opened the day with a 10-0 win over Urbana (OH) and concluded the day with a 7-2 win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Augustana, who moves to 5-1 on the sunshine state road trip, is now 10-4 (0-0 NSIC) overall.

Moments that mattered:
  • In total, Augustana outscored their opponents 17-2 on Sunday.
  • In both games combined, starter Amber Elliott pitched 9.1 innings, allowed one hit, 0 runs, and collected 12 strikeouts
  • Samantha Eisenreich was 3-3 with 3 RBI in game one.
  • Kendall Cornick was 2-2 with 2 RBI in game two.

Game One:

Augustana was firing on all cylinders in game one. Starting in the circle, Elliot was dealing early and often. The sophomore faced just the minimum of 12 batters in her four innings of work, allowing 0 hits and striking out six. Olivia Wolters pitched well in relief, closing the game with one shutout frame.

The Viking offense also put up big numbers early, collected three runs in the first two frames. Kendall Cornick drove in the games first run, and Maggie Dunnett and Mary Pardo also had an RBI.

Augustana broke the game open with a six-run third inning, including an inside-the-park-homerun from Cornick. Both Eisenreich and Delaney Young dove in runs on RBI singles in the third. Young finished the day 3-3 with two runs scored.

The Vikings scored one more run in the 4th before the game was called in the 5th due to a 10-run rule.

Game Two:

Elliott stepped in the circle to start game two and continued to show off her stuff. The righty went five-plus innings, collected six more strikeouts, and allowed just one hit. Elliott collects the win and moves to 4-2 on the year.

Shannon Petersen started the Viking scoring with a two-run single in the 3rd inning. Ashley Mickschl, who ended the day 3-4, also scored a pair of runs for the Vikings.

Augustana added to the advantage in the sixth scoring four more runs. The offense was sparked by Cornick, who drove in a pair on a single up the middle.

Although the Hawks scored two in the 7th, the Viking's Wolters shut the door for the second-straight game.

Augustana now moves onto Monday with a 10:15 a.m. first-pitch versus Jefferson University (PA), and continues play vs. Merrimack (MA) at 12:30 p.m.
