SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana athletic department dedicated the Larson Track and Field Complex Friday afternoon. The facility, directly east of the Elmen Center, is the home for the Viking track and field and cross country teams while versatility allows the complex to be used by all Augustana athletic teams.
Â
"We stand here today because of the generosity of Vikings," Augustana director of athletics
Josh Morton said at the event. "Linda Larson was a leader when she decided to make a tremendous impact on Augustana track and field. Vance Butler was a leader for our track and field program. I think of (former Augustana President) Rob Oliver, whose tenure had the dream of a complex and Bill Gross (former AD) led the way, then helped finish the fundraising to make this complete.
Â
"I think of President (Stephanie) Herseth Sandlin because of her leadership, this facility dedication is just the beginning for Augustana University."
Â
Linda Larson, who gave the lead gift for the complex, honored the memories of her father, William "Billy" Larson, and her sister, Kathie Larson, with the Larson Track and Field Complex name.
Â
"This project was a long time coming," Larson said. "I'm so happy to see it done and am excited about the student-athletes being able to use it."
Â
Having a versatile facility, the track includes eight lanes, allowing the ability to have multiple practices at the same time. There are straightaways on each side of the track, allowing the team to run a full stretch of hurdles or sprints. Other features, which are part of the Vance Butler Field Events area of the complex, are two long jump/triple jump runways, three throwing rings and a steeplechase pit.
Â
The infield of the track contains field turf that will serve all student-athletes.
Â
Tracy Hellman, head coach for the track and field and cross country teams, said it is an emotional time for him.
Â
"I was thinking about the past, and thinking about where we were a year ago, five years ago, 10 years ago and even before my time," Hellman said. "This is emotional for me and our current and past athletes.
Â
"Augie has a storied history in track and field and cross country. We always have. That is something that I've always been proud of. We have had great athletes, awesome coaches, but more importantly, we've had great people."
Â
When talking about the complex, Hellman called home the most powerful word when thanking donors for their gifts.
Â
"Your gifts have given the track and field and cross country teams a home," Hellman added. "That is such a powerful thing for our student-athletes.
Â
"Today, with the help of donors and our administration, our future is written and it says 'Augustana Track and Field and Cross Country has a home."
