Vikings Finish Play at the Augustana Invite

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana women's tennis team hosted the Augustana Invite on Saturday and Sunday at McKennan Park. Six teams competed in six flights of singles action and three flights of doubles action on the weekend. 

On Saturday, Laura Arce Vieyra earned two wins over Tasha Dembo (UMary) and Sam Czarnecki (Rockhurst) to earn a spot in the flight 'A' singles championship against Zharel Turabek (UNK) on Sunday. With a 6-1, 6-3 win over Turabek, Arce Vieyra took home the title in flight 'A' singles. 

Freshman Emily Granson also competed in flight 'A' singles and took the first match against Karolina Strom (MW) but fell 6-3, 6-0 to Turabek on Saturday afternoon. Taylor Jackson took home the consolation championship in flight 'B' singles after defeating Trang Tran (UNK) 4-6, 6-1, 12-10. 

Grace Goble won her first two matches against Claudia Iglesias (MW) and Ibrahimova (UNK) which earned her a spot in the flight 'C' singles championship on Sunday. Unfortunately, Goble fell to Kuzevanova (UNK) 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 to earn runner-up honors. Anca Rusu also competed in flight 'C' singles and took home third place after defeating Ibrahimova (UNK) 6-1, 7-5. 

In flight 'D' singles, Rebecca Falkner took home the championship after defeating Jamie Stoppler (UMary) 6-2, retired on Sunday afternoon. 

Over in doubles action, Arce Vieyra/Jackson and Granson/Kistanova both made it into the flight 'A' doubles championship but the match was not played. In the flight 'B' championship, Goble and Rusu defeated Stoppler and Wolf (UMary) 6-1.

"We had a great weekend and I'm really happy with our performance," head coach Marc Kurtz said. "The whole team fought and battled and we had some great wins. Now we have a little time off to get healthy and prepare for the ITA tournament."

Up Next
The Vikings will travel to Omaha, Nebraska, to compete in the Creighton Invite on Friday before ending the fall season on Oct. 3 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the ITA Regional Tournament.
