Viking Baseball Readies for Four Game Series With Emporia State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana baseball team continues nonconference play this weekend with another four-game road series. The Vikings are set to take on the Hornets of Emporia State in Emporia, Kansas. 

The Event
Game one is slated to start at 3 p.m. on Friday, games two and three will be played on Saturday, starting at noon and game four is set for noon on Sunday. The Vikings are 1-3 in the all-time series with the Hornets with Augustana winning the most recent matchup, 4-2. That game came during the 2018 national championship run in the regional.

The Hornets
Emporia State comes into the weekend series with a 6-4 record. The Hornets went 3-0 in their first tournament of the year, before losing two out of three to CSU Pueblo and splitting a four game set with Metropolitan State University in Denver. Friday's game will also serve as Emporia's home opener for the 2020 season. 

The Vikings
Last series, Augustana earned a split against No. 21 Arkansas Monticello, winning games two and four. Jordan Barth led the Vikings offensively, hitting safely in all four games with a .429 average. Overall, the Vikings had five players log four or more hits in the opening series and totaled eight extra-base hits on the weekend. 

On the mound, Tanner Brown earned NSIC Pitcher of the Week honors for Augustana after leading the team to a game-two win. The junior tossed five shutout innings and only allowed two hits while striking out five. Overall, Augustana arms struck out 30 hitters in 30.2 innings last weekend and only allowed 21 hits. 

Player to Watch
Senior outfielder Riley Johnson enjoyed a solid series at the plate last time out against Arkansas Monticello. Johnson went 5-13 with three RBIs and two multi-hit games, hitting safely in three of the four games. The one game Johnson didn't hit safely in still featured two RBI sacrifice fly's and a walk. Look for the number three hitter to have another productive weekend at the plate. 

One Last Thing
The weekend series with Emporia State will be Augustana's last four-game series of the season as the rest of their schedule features doubleheaders and three-game series'.
