Johnson’s Two Homers, 10-Run Fourth Leads Viking Baseball to Victory

EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Augustana baseball team turned an early five-run deficit into a distant memory Friday afternoon in its 14-6 game one win over the Emporia State Hornets. 

Augustana took an early 1-0 lead on a Carter Howell RBI groundout in the bottom of the first, before Emporia State piled five runs on in the bottom half and tacked another on in the third for a 6-1 lead. The Vikings went 1-2-3 in the second and third innings before their offensive explosion in the fourth inning. 

Senior outfielder Riley Johnson led the frame off with Augustana's first long ball of the year, followed by a Jordan Barth double, Carter Howell RBI single and Jaxon Rosencranz RBI triple to complete the cycle for the inning and bring the score to 6-4. After a popout, junior catcher Will Olson smoked his first homer of the season, a two-run shot that knotted the game at six apiece. 

The Vikings weren't done after Olson's homer, and tacked on four more runs thanks to an RBI single from Ryan Nickel, four more singles, a walk and a flurry of Emporia State errors. 

Overall, Augustana recorded 10 hits and 10 runs in the inning while going from down five runs to up five runs in the frame.  

Augustana scored twice more in the sixth as Howell singled and scored on Rosencranz's second RBI triple of the game. Ryan Nickel doubled Rosencranz in for his second RBI of the day to bring the score to 13-6. The Vikings final run came in the seventh on a solo homer from Johnson, his second on the day.

On the mound, junior lefty Tanner Brown got the start for Augustana and went five innings surrendering six hits and six earned runs while striking out eight. Senior righty Parker Hanson came on in relief and pitched the remaining four innings allowing no runs and just two hits while striking out five.

Overall, Augustana tallied 19 hits with eight of them going for extra bases. The Vikings two through six hitters went a combined 15-28 on the day with Riley Johnson going 2-6 with three runs and three RBIs, Jordan Barth going 3-6, Carter Howell going 5-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Jaxon Rosencranz going 3-6 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Ryan Nickel going 2-4 with two RBIs.

Senior Jordan Gesling and junior JT Mix added to the hit total as well with Gesling going 1-3 and Mix going 2-4 with a double and run scored, giving the Vikings six hitters with multiple hits on the day. 

Augustana continues its series with Emporia State tomorrow with games two and three. First pitch is set for noon at Trusler Sports Complex.
