Viking Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Emporia State

Carter Howell stays red hot, goes 6-of-7 on the day

EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Augustana baseball team earned a split Saturday afternoon in its two seven-inning affairs with the Emporia State Hornets. The Vikings came from behind to win game one 6-4 and fell in a slugfest in game two by a score of 16-12.

Game One
The Vikings came from behind twice and only allowed one hit to down the Hornets in the game one victory. Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz smoked a two-run homer to knot the score at two.

The Hornets scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead, before Augustana put together an impressive four-run sixth. Carter Howell led the inning off with a single and after a flyout, Ryan Nickel singled and Will Olson walked to load the bases with one out with junior infielder Bjorn Hanson coming to the plate. Hanson then smoked a double to the right-center gap to tie the game at four.

Junior infielder JT Mix followed Hanson's double with a go-ahead two-run single that scored Hanson and Olson to complete the comeback and put Augustnana up 6-4. From there, junior righty Thomas Bruss shut the door on the final two innings, retiring six Hornets in a row to earn the win for the Vikings.

Sophomore righty Seth Miller started on the mound for the Vikings going 4.1 innings with just one hit allowed, four walks, three earned runs and three strikeouts. Yesterday's starter, Tanner Brown, also came on for a third of an inning, before handing the ball to Bruss for the final seven outs. The three pitchers combined for the one-hitter with Bruss taking the win.

Offensively, Carter Howell continued his fantastic series with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, 8-of-10 in the series after two games, and Jordan Barth extended his hitting streak to six games with a double.

Game Two
A hot start in game two was not enough to overcome some pitching woes for the Vikings. Augustana scored five times in the first inning on RBI singles from Jaxon Rosencranz and Bjorn Hanson, followed by a three-run double by Sam Baier. Emporia State got two of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but failed to score in the second and third, preserving the Vikings' lead.

The Hornets took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth, however, with a six-run frame highlighted by a one-out grand slam off the bat of Emporia's Cooper Mimnnick.

Now trailing 8-5, Augustana answered Emporia State and took the lead right back in the top half of the fifth inning with a five-run frame of its own. Rosencranz added to his RBI total with a game-tying three-run homer to tie the game at eight. Nickel followed Rosencranz with a single and after a couple of walks, junior infielder Mix came through with a two-out bases loaded go-ahead single to put the Vikings up 10-8.

Emporia State, however, took the lead for good in the bottom half of the fifth inning, scoring six times on four hits and five walks to bring the score to 14-10.

Howell continued his torrid day at the plate with a solo shot in the top of the sixth to make it 14-11 Emporia. Overall, Howell went 6-for-7 on the day with four runs scored, one walk and one RBI. The sophomore is now a whopping 11-for-13 at the plate in the series.

The Hornets pushed two more across in the bottom of the sixth inning while the Vikings scored once in the top of the seventh on a Will Olson RBI single to bring the final score to 16-12.

Junior righty Evan Furst got the start on the mound for Augustana and went 3.1 innings giving up three earned runs while striking out five. The Vikings used six different relievers in the last 2.2 innings of work.

Offensively, Jordan Barth moved his hitting-streak to seven games while Riley Johnson notched a hit in the effort as well.
