SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana men's tennis team opens the spring portion of its schedule Saturday in Grand Forks, North Dakota, with a pair of duals against North Dakota and Concordia College. The match with UND is slated for 10:30 a.m. while the contest with the Cobbers is at 2:30 p.m. The duals take place at Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks.
Quotable
This year's men's team could be one of the deepest teams that we've had while I have been coaching at Augustana," head coach
Marc Kurtz said. "We are solid up and down the lineup and we are ready to get going this weekend."
The Fighting Hawks
North Dakota has won three-straight duals after starting 2020 with an 0-2 mark. The Fighting Hawks, last competed last weekend with a 5-2 win over Illinois-Chicago. UND was tabbed to finish in a tie for sixth in the preseason Summit League Coaches' Poll.
Freshman Andreja Petrovic was named the UND Player to Watch after competing on the ATP Tour last summer reaching the Round of 16 tournament in Cairo. He is currently 4-0 playing in the No. 1 singles slot.
The Cobbers
Concordia College is 1-1 on the young season, having swept Crown College and getting swept by Carleton in MIAC action. Facing the Vikings will be the Cobbers' first nonconference action of the season. In the MIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, Concordia was tabbed seventh.
Jared Saue has played in the No. 1 singles slot in the first two duals holding a 1-1 record while Erik Porter is 1-1 in No. 2 singles. The duo combined for all-MIAC honors last season in doubles action.
The Vikings
Augustana had its lone dual of the fall season canceled due to inclement weather in Sioux City, Iowa, making Saturday's contests the first duals of the season. The Vikings return senior
Logan Barr from 2018-19, who predominantly played in No. 1 singles. He owned a 7-7 record in the slot, while going 2-2 in four matches at No. 2.
Also returning from last season's squad is
North Knewtson who tallied a team-best 13-6 record. He earned 11 of those wins at No. 5 singles and has won four-straight matches entering Saturday.
Looking Ahead
Augustana welcomes Morningside to Sioux Falls on Friday, Feb. 14. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at GreatLIFE Woodlake Athletic Club.
