Augustana Swimming & Diving Accumulates 12 Victories in Tri Invite

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana swimming & diving teams had a strong showing at the Tri Invite hosted by Sioux Falls inside the Midco Aquatics Center on Friday and Saturday. 

In team scores, the women's team defeated both St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls on Friday night. Augustana beat Sioux Falls by 21 points, scoring 123 points to Sioux Falls' 102, the Vikings defeated St. Cloud State scoring 127 points to the Huskies' 116 points.

The men's team scored 68 points, while St. Cloud State scored 171 points.

Friday's meet was highlighted by multiple wins with the reigning NSIC's Swimmer of the Year, Taylor Beagle, winning the 1,000-Free (10:33.11) and the 500-Free (5:12.64). Freshman Leona Coha was close behind Beagle taking second in both events in times of 10:38.62 and 5:13.98, respectively.

The women also won the 400-Free relay in 3:37.66. The team consisted of Kamryn Robarge, Amaya Street, Meghan Mulvihill and Makoa Montgomery.

On the men's side, freshman Pedro Borin won the 100-Butterfly in a time of 50.50.

The second event winner for the men came in the 100-Breaststroke in Mason Kauffeld, touching the wall in 1:00.32.

On Saturday, the women's team again topped Sioux Falls, scoring 136 points to Sioux Falls' 89. However, AU narrowly lost to St. Cloud State scoring 121 points to the Huskies 122 points.

The men scored 71 points to St. Cloud States 164.

On the women's side, the Vikings swept the first three places in the 400-IM led by Beagle, (4:38.34). Coha earned runner-up, swimming a time of 4:41.10, while sophomore Anna Tindall placed third in 4:47.86.

Shortly after the 400-IM, Coha would return to win the 200-Butterfly in 2:12.61.

Beagle doubled back to compete in the 500-Free in a time of 5:12.26. That bettered her time from Friday while winning the event for the second day in a row. Coha also placed second, similar to the day before, also bettering her time at 5:13.68.

Montgomery swept the short sprints winning both the 50-Free and 100-Free in 24.70 and 54.08, respectively.

On the men's side, Borin won two events for the Vikings. He won the 400-IM in 4:10.38 and the 200-Butterfly, touching the wall in 1:53.18. That was seven seconds faster than the second-place finisher, teammate Brady Monson, who finished in a time of 2:00.21.

Kauffeld, who won the 100-breaststroke a day before, came back and won the 200-breaststroke in 2:11.09.

Up Next

Augustana is back in action Friday and Saturday traveling to Gunnison, Colorado, for a quad invite hosted by Colorado Mesa. Western Colorado and Colorado School of Mines will round out the four teams competing.
