SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana women's tennis doubles team of
Laura Arce Vieyra and
Gabriela Jancikova have been selected to participate in the 2021 ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia, Oct. 14-17. The duo is an at-large selection after competing as a finalist at the ITA Central Region Championship last weekend.
"I'm so excited for Laura and Gabriela to be selected for this prestigious national event where they will be able to compete for a national championship," Vikings head coach
Marc Kurtz said. "I had Laura and Gabi paired up together to start the fall and things were a little rough to begin. We struggled at first in the first tournament (Drake), but we've been improving every match and had an amazing Central Region Tournament.
"This is an amazing opportunity for the ladies and I'm so thrilled for them to be able to experience this event."
In the fall season, Augustana competed at a trio of events, beginning with a tournament hosted by Drake Sept. 10-12. The Vikings followed with a two-day tournament at Creighton (Sept. 24-25) before the ITA Regional in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oct. 1-3.
Arce Vieyra is a former NSIC Freshman of the Year and two-time NSIC Preseason Player of the Year. The Mexico City, Mexico, native tallied a 14-4 record in singles in 2021 and recorded a 15-3 record in doubles when partnering with the now graduated
Grace Goble.
Jancikova is in her first year at Augustana after graduating from the Business Academy and Hotel School Trebiv in Sosuvka, Czech Republic. She played to a 9 UTR prior to joining Augustana.
The ITA Cup takes place in the Rome Tennis Center and is hosted by Berry College in Rome, Georgia. There are 16 doubles teams in the event and the duo of Jancikova and Arce Vieyra are the only student-athletes from the NSIC to be selected.
Previously, the Vikings saw Kornelia Staniszewska qualify for the ITA Cup in singles action in 2017. The last doubles team to qualify was Staniszewska and Jessa Richards in 2015.
