Steffens Dominant, Pitches Augustana Baseball To Series Win Over Minot State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Max Steffens lived up to the title Sunday afternoon at Ronken Field. With Steffens on the mound, the Vikings defeated the Beavers of Minot State 5-1, taking the three-game series and moving to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the NSIC.

For the second time this season, Steffens gave up a leadoff home run to his opponent, though that strategy is starting to look like a bad omen for opposing offenses. Following the homer, Steffens dominated the Minot lineup, allowing no more runs while striking out 10 in eight innings pitched. Steffens is now 3-0 on the season with a 1.40 ERA and 21 total strikeouts.

Junior righty Evan Furst pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure the Vikings victory.

Offensively, the Vikings got started in the bottom of the third. After sophomore outfielder Carter Howell earned a walk, he advanced all the way to third base on a failed pickoff attempt. Two batters later, after junior infielder JT Mix took one for the team, fellow junior infielder Jordan Barth brought home the first Viking run with an RBI groundout.

Tied 1-1, Augustana took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, senior outfielder Riley Johnson smoked a single through the left side. After Johnson stole second, senior shortstop Sam Baier advanced to second after a throwing error from the Minot shortstop, scoring Johnson in the process for the 2-1 lead.

Up 2-1, senior infielder Christian Kuzemka sent an RBI single up the middle to bring Baier home  and give the Vikings a 3-1 lead.

Augustana tacked on some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Barth led the inning off with a double to the left field wall and then took third on a passed ball. Johnson then smoked an RBI double to the left-center gap for a 4-1 lead. After a Johnson steal of third, Baier brought him home with a deep sacrifice fly to right field to push the score to 5-1.

Overall, Augustana notched seven hits on the day: two from Howell and Johnson and one apiece from Barth, Kuzemka and junior catcher Will Olson
