Viking Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. -- The Augustana baseball team defeated the Northern State Wolves 2-0 in game one before falling 4-3 in game two of Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader. The Vikings are now 18-6 overall and 14-6 within the NSIC. 

Game One
Senior lefty Koby Bishop started on the mound for the Vikings in game one and emerged victorious in a pitcher's duel with Northern State's Brian Baker. 

Bishop dominated and went the distance for Augustana, tossing seven shutout innings while striking out 14 Northern State hitters with just four hits and two walks. On the season, the senior now has 43 strikeouts in 28.2 innings pitched with a 4-1 record and 2.83 ERA. 

Sophomore outfielder Carter Howell led the game off with a single followed by a walk from senior shortstop Sam Baier. After the pair stole second and third, Howell came around to score on a RBI groundout from junior infielder Jordan Barth. 

Up 1-0, the Vikings tallied their second and final run of the game in the top of the fourth on a double from senior infielder Christian Kuzemka that brought in Barth. 

Up 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Wolves threatened to score with a bases-loaded no-out situation, following a hit, walk and fielder's choice. Bishop, however, brought the rally to a screeching halt as he struck out the next three hitters to end the threat. 

Bishop cruised the rest of the game, securing the 2-0 win for Augustana. 

At the plate, Barth tallied two hits while Howell, Kuzemka, junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz and junior infielder JT Mix all finished with one. 

Game Two
Freshman righty Caleb Kranz got the game two start for the Vikings and delivered five shutout innings. The freshman allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out nine. 

Augustana struck first in game two with a three-spot in the top of the fourth. Junior catcher Will Olson doubled in Baier and then later scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman catcher Drey Dirksen. Up 2-0, Rosencranz smoked a double to right-center, driving in senior outfielder Riley Johnson who singled earlier in the inning. 

Down 3-0, the Wolves tallied two runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch and homer to cut the lead to just one run. 

In the bottom of the eighth, the Wolves completed the comeback with a couple of two-out runs by way of an RBI single and wild pitch. 

The Viking bats were held scoreless in the top half of the ninth to close out the game. 

Up Next
The Vikings return home for a three-game weekend series against Concordia-St. Paul. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday's game three will start at noon.
