Viking Baseball Sweeps Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A 10-run first inning propelled the Augustana baseball team to a 17-5 victory Saturday afternoon in game three of the series against the Bemidji State Beavers. The sweep moves the Vikings to 13-4 overall and 9-4 within the NSIC.

After a record-breaking performance in Friday's doubleheader, the offense came out firing from the start in Saturday's matchup. In the top of the first inning alone, Augustana scored 10 times, tallied 10 hits and sent 15 batters to the plate.

In the inning, senior outfielder Riley Johnson, senior shortstop Sam Baier, junior infielder Jordan Barth and sophomore outfielder Carter Howell all notched two hits apiece while Johnson collected four RBIs, Baier drove in two and Barth drove in one.

Junior catcher Will Olson and freshman infielder Max Mosser also collected hits in the inning, including an RBI single from Olson.

Barth continued his monster day at the plate with home runs in the third and fourth inning, a solo shot in the third and a three-run shot in the fourth, giving him four hits, four runs scored and five RBI's through the first four frames.

Up 14-1, the Vikings pushed two runs across in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior infielder JT Mix's bat and a solo home run from senior infielder Darek Bornemeier

Augustana scored its 17th and final run of the day in the top of the seventh after freshman catcher Drey Dirksen drove in sophomore utility man Tony Lanier with a single. Lanier doubled to left center to start off the frame.

Overall, the Vikings tallied 20 hits: four from Barth, three apiece from Johnson and Baier and two apiece from Howell and Dirksen. Bornemeier, Olson, Lanier, Mosser, senior infielder Chrisitan Kuzemka and sophomore catcher Mitch Stroh all finished with one hit apiece.

On the mound, senior righty Max Steffens earned the win with four innings of one-run ball before handing the ball to junior righty Evan Furst. Furst pitched the fifth inning while sophomore righty Josh Peterson and freshman righty Caleb Kranz combined to pitch the sixth.

Lanier came on and pitched a scoreless seventh to secure the run-rule victory.
