Monko Tallies Two Major Awards as Women’s Tennis Garners Many Honors

Head Coach Marc Kurtz Named NSIC Coach of The Year

BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- The Augustana women's tennis team claimed a trio of notable postseason awards the NSIC the league office announced Tuesday. Highlights include freshman Valeriya Monko being named the NSIC Freshman and Player of the Year as well as six All-NSIC honorees in singles and all three doubles teams. Head coach Marc Kurtz also claimed NSIC Coach of the Year honors. 

The accomplishment marks the ninth time Kurtz has been selected as NSIC Coach of the Year. This is also the fifth-consecutive Player of the Year honor the Vikings have received. Augustana has also earned NSIC Freshman of the Year four of the last five years. 

The aforementioned Monko was tabbed First Team All-Conference in both singles and doubles, being partnered with freshman Florentia Hadjigeorgiou. Monko went 17-2 in No. 1 singles and went undefeated within the conference with seven wins. Teamed with Hadjgeorgiou, the pair went 16-4 and were ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation and went 7-1 within the conference. 

Hadjigeorgiou also was named First Team All-Conference with her 15-2 record, mostly at No. 2 singles. She also played one match at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-0, 6-1, win.

Also earning First Team All-Conference in both singles and doubles was junior Laura Arce Vieyra. She went 14-4 primarily in the No. 3 slot, going a perfect 7-0 in conference play. In doubles, she partnered with senior Grace Goble as the duo went 15-3 and 7-0 within the conference.

Goble also was tabbed honorable mention for singles play with her 6-1 record mostly played in the No. 6 slot She posted a 4-0 record within the conference.

Freshman Margarita Chouliara was named to the Second Team All-Conference with her 13-3 record mostly being played in No. 4 singles and went 7-0 within NSIC play.

Augustana's No. 3 doubles duo of Emily Granson and Aleksandra Kistanova were tabbed Second Team All-Conference having a record of 17-1 and boasting an undefeated 7-0 record within the conference. Kistanova was also selected to honorable mention for singles play going 14-2 and 6-0 with the conference primarily playing in the No. 5 slot.

Augustana earned the NSIC Regular Season Championship with an 11-0 record in NSIC action and claimed the NSIC Tournament Championship without conceding a point. Overall, the Vikings finished the season at 18-3 and are ranked No. 20 in the latest ITA Top-25 poll.
