Viking Baseball Completes Comeback, Sweeps Upper Iowa With Game Three Win

FAYETTE, Iowa -- Trailing for the majority of the afternoon, the Augustana baseball team rallied in the late innings Saturday afternoon and defeated the Upper Iowa Peacocks 6-5. The three-game sweep of Upper Iowa closes the regular season and moves Augustana to 31-9 overall and 27-9 within the NSIC.

The Peacocks jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs scored in the bottom of the first and one run scored in the bottom of the second. The Vikings cut into the lead in the top of the third, tallying a run on a fielder's choice.

Up 3-1, the Peacocks pushed across another run in the bottom of the third to regain their three-run advantage. Augustana, after a quiet fourth and fifth, cut the lead in half in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman infielder Max Mosser singled to start the frame, moved to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a sacrifice and then eventually scored on an RBI groundout from senior infielder Christian Kuzemka.

Down 4-2 in the top of the seventh, the Vikings inched closer and cut the Upper Iowa lead to just one. With two outs and two runners on, the Vikings capitalized on some sloppy defense from the Peacocks and scored on a throwing error from the Upper Iowa third baseman.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Peacocks scored an unearned run and led 5-3, standing just six outs away from victory. The Viking bats, however, were not done and rallied in the top of the eighth.

Sophomore catcher Mitch Stroh got things started in the frame with a one-out walk. Freshman catcher Drey Dirksen followed Stroh with a single up the middle and the Vikings loaded the bases after a single through the left side from senior infielder Darek Bornemeier.

With one out and the bases juiced, sophomore outfielder Carter Howell stepped up to the plate and delivered a two-run double down the left field line, tying the game at 5-5 and putting runners on second and third with just one out. Mosser then gave Augustana a 6-5 lead with a sacrifice fly.

Junior lefty Tanner Brown, who came on in relief in the sixth inning, held the Peacocks scoreless in the bottom of the eighth and handed the ball to junior righty Evan Furst in the ninth. Furst retired the Peacocks in order in the ninth to earn the save and secure the 6-5 comeback victory.

At the plate, Mosser remained red-hot with three hits in the game while Dirksen and senior shortstop Sam Baier each had two. Howell and Bornemeier each finished with one.
