SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana volleyball team defeated the Dragons of MSU Moorhead in three sets (25-19, 25-14, 25-19) in Moorhead, Minnesota, on Friday night.
The Vikings move to an 13-5 record with a 5-5 record in NSIC play. The Dragons have fallen to a 5-13 record and are 2-8 in the loop.
Augustana made their presence known early in set one making use of the Dragons early attack errors. An early 6-0 run by the Vikings created room for AU as they cruised their way through the first set. Seniors Avery Thorson and Erika Bute each delivered an ace apiece to give the Vikings an edge while aiding AU's efficient offense. Senior Maddy Guetter hammered home the final kill of the set, reigning in the Vikings first set win of the evening.
The Vikings came back for more in set two coming out with an early 4-1 run including an ace by Guetter to set the tone for the set to come. Following a tie at 10, the Vikings picked up momentum mid-set to go on a 9-3 run to take off with the lead. A final 5-0 run by Augustana brought home set two for the Vikings following an ace by sophomore Jolie Stecher.
Set three was a back-and-forth scoring brawl until AU pulled away mid-set to run home with the match. Stecher delivered back-to-back aces for the Vikings to keep AU ahead following an MSUM timeout. The Vikings exploited Dragon errors to keep the lead while also hammering home 12 kills and three aces. A final kill by Stecher reigned in the match and set point for the Vikings.
Overall, Augustana recorded 38 kills and had nine aces compared to the Dragons 26 kills and four aces. Senior Kate Reimann led the way for the Vikings with 14 kills hitting an impressive .367 at the net. Reimann also added on five digs and 14 points to her stat line. Thorson tallied 33 assists and two aces while adding three points.
On the defensive side, Bute received 14 digs and delivered one service ace. Senior Piper Asche forced two solo blocks and four kills in tonight's matchup.
