Viking Men’s Tennis Blank St John’s; Drop Morningside

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana men's tennis team had a 2-0 weekend with wins against St. John's in the final home match of the season on Saturday evening (7-0) and Morningside (6-1) in Sioux City, Iowa, on Sunday.

The Vikings claimed the doubles point with two-of-three wins in doubles play. The No. 1 doubles team of Henry Dornsbusch and Justin Karcher won handily in 6-0 fashion. Tyson Cowger and Tory Shafer secured the doubles point with their win in No. 3 doubles, also winning 6-0.

Augustana cleaned up in singles play, winning all six matches. Both Dornsbusch and Joseph Plachy won their matches in 6-0, 6-1, fashion coming in No. 1 singles and No. 4 singles, respectively.

Karcher garnered the win in No. 2 singles by way of 6-2, 6-3. Nicholas LaPoint bested his opponent 6-4, 6-2, in No. 3 singles.

The doubles team of Cowger and Shafer both secured wins in singles play in the No. 5 and No. 6 slots, with scores of 6-0, 6-3, and 6-2, 6-1, respectively.

Augustana 6, Morningside 1

Augustana earned the doubles point with all three doubles teams earning wins. Henry Dornbusch and Justin Karcher handled No. 1 doubles in 6-1 fashion. Tory Shafer and Tyson Cowger also earned their second doubles win of the week, winning 6-0. 

The freshmen duo of Christian Cortinas and Gavin Schmidt earned their first varsity win in No. 3 doubles, winning 6-4.

The Vikings won five of six matches in singles play, highlighted by Cowger's 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 5 singles.

Dornbusch and Shafer had similar scores in No. 1 and No. 6 singles, both garnering wins with scores of 6-2, 6-1, and 6-1, 6-2, respectively.

Karcher claimed No. 2 singles, taking the first set 6-0, and closing out the second set 6-2.

Joseph Plachy fought hard in No. 4 singles, taking the first set 7-5, before handling the second set 6-2.

The dual with Morningside concludes the career of Shafer, who will be graduating early from Augustana. He goes out having won two-straight matches.
