EDMOND, Okla.. -- The Augustana men's and women's tennis teams competed in the ITA Central Regional Championships this past weekend in Edmond, Oklahoma, hosted by Central Oklahoma.
"This was another good tournament for our teams with extremely good competition for everyone," said head coach Marc Kurtz. "We had a lot of good competitive matches and now we know some of the things that we need to work on this fall."
Women's doubles play highlighted the weekend for the Vikings.Â
Teammates Senem Ocal and Florentia Hadjigeorgiou advanced to the quarterfinals following wins over Cosatto and Jayaprakash of Northeastern State as well as Donnelly and Curci of Missouri Western. The pair had a final win 8-6 in the quarterfinals against Kamoe and Kozlova of Henderson State. In the semifinals Senem and Hadjigeorgiou fell to Boyar and Buntrock of Central Oklahoma 8-1 who went on to win the titleÂ
In her senior campaign, Emily Granson's weekend started with 6-0, 7-5, victory against Clarisa Valenzuela of Ouachita out of the round of 32. She then moved on to a second victory over Rachel McCrae of Harding 6-0, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals. Granson was defeated by Sandra Marti Marti of Northeastern State 7-5, 6-4 during her final round of weekend play.
Senem continued her success in single's play this weekend with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hands from Newman in the opening round of play.
Laura Arce Vieyra opened this weekend with a 6-3, 6-2, win over Karremans of Northeastern State in the round of 64 before falling in the round of 32.Â
Augustana newcomer Aleksandra Kistanova saw success in her opening round with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Stemmer of Fort Hays State
During men's play, Henry Dornbusch bested Anton Sarunic of Meridian Community College in the round of 64. In the round of 32 Dornbusch fell to Marin Jurkovic of Southeastern Oklahoma State.
"It's always difficult when we lose matches but we need to use that as motivation in practice in the coming months," Kurtz added. "We will learn and grow from these matches and be ready in February."Â
