Viking Hockey Drops Friday Night Contest, 5-2

Kayden Hargraves shines in relief duty

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Augustana Vikings hockey dropped a Friday night game as Alaska Fairbanks jumped out to a 4-0 lead inside the Carlson Center. Kayden Hargraves collected 20 saves in relief in his first collegiate minutes.

The Nanooks opened up the match halfway through the first period as Harrison Israel tapped in a rebound goal off a shot from the corner. UAF continued its momentum with a power play goal with less than 30 seconds to go in the first period. 

The Nanooks' powered in a power play goal and finished off a two on one to make the game 4-0 halfway through the second frame. 

Ryan Naumovski stopped the bleeding with a power play goal off passes from Colton Friesen and Evan McIntryre with just under five minutes to go in the second period. The Vikings finished off a second power play opportunity with just under two-minutes remaining in the frame as Friesen skated the puck into the offensive zone and found Brett Meerman in the slot for his third of the season. 

Both teams exchanged chances throughout the final 20 minutes but Anton Rubstov scored the final dagger in the 5-2 Nanooks' win as he beat out Will Svenddal to find the back of the empty net. 

Game Moments
  • Kayden Hargraves collected his first collegiate minutes as he relieved Josh Kotai midway through the second period. The freshman goalie spent his three-year junior career in Fairbanks, Alaska where he collected 68 wins for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League.  
  • Augustana converted on two of six power play opportunities. 
  • Alaska Fairbanks opened up the game with a 4-0 lead. 
  • Colton Friesen and Evan McIntyre tallied two assists in the Vikings' loss.
Goals
  • UAF found the back of the net first midway through the second period as Harrison Israel banged in a rebound in front of the net. 
  • The Nanooks followed up their opening goal with a power play goal in the final minute of play in the first period. Caleb McDonald fired in his second of the season off a one-timed shot from the top of the circle.
  • Halfway through the second period, Alaska Fairbanks continued its offensive momentum with a one-timer on the power play. T.J Lloyd fired one through traffic to push the lead to 3-0. 
  • The bleeding continued as Cade Ahrenholz powered in a shot off a two on one play. 
  • Augustana battled back with just under five minutes to play in the second frame as Ryan Naumovski scored his fourth of the season on the power play. 
  • Colton Friesen collected his second assist of the night as he carried the puck into the offensive zone and found Brett Meerman to cut the lead to 4-2. 
  • Anton Rubstov scored the final dagger in the 5-2 Nanooks' win as he potted the empty netter.
