ST. GEORGE, Kan.--The Augustana baseball team went 1-1 at Emporia State on Sunday, claiming the series 3-1. The Vikings defeated the Hornets 4-2 in an 11-inning outing in game one of the doubleheader. In game two, Emporia State won, 6-1.
The Vikings move to 4-5Â on the season following the series. Emporia State's record moves to 4-7 overall.
Game One: Augustana 4, Emporia State 2
The Vikings were the first team on the board in the second inning of the game. Nick Banowetz singled to center field, bringing home Jason Axelberg.Â
The Hornets answered in the bottom of the second inning with one run to tie the game.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the 11th inning when Ragan Pinnow hit a home run that sent Jack Hines and Trevor Winterstein in to score. The home run was Pinnow's second of the series.
On the mound, Seth Miller started the game and struck out seven batters in 5.1 innings. Adam Diedrich took over for Miller and spent 1.1 innings on the mound, logging one strikeout. Ethan Cole entered the game and pitched 1.1 innings, striking out two. Closing out the game was Caleb Kranz who tossed three innings and struck out six batters.
Hines went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored a run for the Vikings. Winterstein and Pinnow both went 2-for-5. Pinnow led the lineup with 3 RBI.
Game Two: Emporia State 6, Augustana 1
The Hornets led 3-0 early, scoring on two home runs in the second inning. Augustana responded with a solo home run from Jack Hines, but fell short in an attempt to take the lead in the game.
Emporia State added another run in the fourth inning, scoring two runs in the fifth inning to bring the score to 6-1.
Gabe Pilla got the start on the mound and pitched four innings, striking out seven batters. Ryan Clementi and Kai Taylor each pitched one inning in the contest with Taylor striking out all three batters that he faced.
Hines led Augustana going 2-for-3 and scoring the lone run for the Vikings.

Augustana travels to Lakewood, Colorado, on February 25 and 26 for a four-game series against Colorado Christian. The Vikings will play doubleheaders on both days with the first games slated for 11 a.m.
