Viking Baseball Falls to Vulcans in Doubleheader

2/4/2023 12:55:00 AM

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 HILO, Hawai'i – The Augustana baseball team fell short in its first doubleheader of the season with losses to Hawai'i Hilo by scores of 9-6 and 3-1. Augustana closes its series with the Vulcans on Saturday with a 4 p.m. (CT) first pitch.

Game One: Hawai'i Hilo 9, Augustana 6
Augustana tallied 11 hits in the nine-inning affair. The Vikings led the game 1-0 in the first inning after Jacob Ornelles sent Trevor Winterstein home for a run on a ground out.

In the third inning, the Vulcans scored two runs to take the lead on a sacrifice fly to left field. AU would tie the game in the fourth inning when Luke Ballweg hit a double to send Max Mosser in for a score.

Hawai'i Hilo pieced together seven runs in the fourth inning, pushing the lead to 9-2.

Augustana added another run to the board in the top of the fifth inning when Ornelles singled to center field, plating Winterstein for the second time in the game.

The Vikings scored two more runs in the sixth inning on a Jack Hines' single which scored Trey Walker and Spencer Marenco. A solo shot from Marenco in the eighth inning would bring AU's score to six runs. The home run was the first in an Augustana uniform for Marenco, a junior transfer from Yakima College.

Ragan Pinnow, Hines and Ballweg each logged two hits. Hines and Ornelles led with two RBI each.

Ashton Michek got the start on the mound for the Vikings, tossing three innings and striking out one. Seth Miller took over for Michek in the fourth inning and struck out three batters through five frames.

Game Two: Hawai'i Hilo 3, Augustana 1
Trevor Winterstein all but manufactured the Vikings 1-0 lead all on his own. The leadoff hitter bunted his way to first base, stole second then took third base on a fly out to right field by Jack Hines. His base-running prowess then gave Hawai'i Hilo's starting pitcher the jitters as he was balked home.

The home team on the scoreboard then tied the game in the bottom of the second to make it a 1-1 score.

The Vikings put a threat together in the top of the fifth inning when Nick Banowetz singled into center field and Trevor Winterstein drew an eight-pitch walk. After Banowetz was picked off at second base, Winterstein was pushed to third base on a Ragan Pinnow single. However, that was as far as AU would advance around the bases in the inning as the Vulcans put an end to the threat.

Hawai'i Hilo then scratched together a three-hit, two-run bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead.

That 3-1 score proved to be the final.

Augustana totaled five hits in the contest with all five coming from a different spot in the order. Winterstein concluded the contest with a hit, two walks and the run scored.

On the pitching mound, Kai Taylor got the start, tossing 2.2 innings, giving up three hits and a run while Ethan Cole threw the final 3.1 innings while striking out five.
