Viking Softball Splits with Rockhurst Sunday

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Augustana softball team split its doubleheader on Sunday in Kansas City, Kansas, with Rockhurst. The Vikings fell in extra innings, 12-11, in game one, then prevailed, 6-4, in the day's second game.
 
Augustana is 9-8 on the year while Rockhurst is 4-11.
 
Game 1: Rockhurst 12, Augustana 11
In a back-and-forth affair, Rockhurst snuck ahead in the eighth inning 12-11. Kennedy Buckman hit two home runs while Delaney Young also connected with a long ball in the contest.
 
The Vikings fell behind 8-1 before embarking on a comeback to tie things up at 11-all. That started with a three-run home run by Buckman and a three-run home run by Young in the third and fourth innings, respectively.
 
Torri Chute made it 8-8 in the fifth inning, scoring Gracey Brink with a double. After Rockhurst retook the lead at 11-8, Andrea Cain drove in Liz Dierks in the sixth inning then scored on a wild pitch. The 11-11 score came courtesy of Buckman's second home run.
 
In the extra inning, Rockhurst won in walk-off fashion on a single.
 
Of the 15 hits in the game, Sydney Herbert recorded three of them while four others recorded two each.
 
Game 2: Augustana 6, Rockhurst 4
Gracey Brink got the Vikings' scoring started with a solo home run to left field in the third inning.
 
The home Hawks knotted things up in the fourth inning.
 
In the fifth inning, Augustana pieced together a pair of runs to retake the lead at 3-1. Brink was the first run across the plate after singling into left center and moving to second and third in succession thanks to a sacrifice bunt and single into left field. Delaney Young then singled through the left side to score Brink.
 
Torri Chute, the batter that pushed Brink to third base, then scored on a fielding error by the second baseman.
 
Rockhurst then took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning to set in motion the Vikings' comeback.
 
The game was knotted at 4-4 after Ashton Dorman singled into centerfield to score Chute. The next batter, Kennedy Buckman, then singled up the middle to score Bergen Lindner. The 6-4 lead was made possible thanks to a pinch-hit single by Nicole Bellis. She singled through the left side to score Dorman.
 
Lexie Lander then came into the circle and shut out the home team to preserve the 6-4 win for the save.
 
Hailey Houston got the start, tossing six innings by giving up four hits and striking out seven.
In the batter's box, AU racked up 13 hits with three each from Brink and Dorman.

Augustana stays in the Kansas City area on Monday with a doubleheader at Central Missouri. First pitch in Warrensburg, Missouri, is slated for 1 p.m.
