CARY, N.C.--The Augustana baseball team earned a 5-1 victory over D'Youville on Saturday to open up the spring trip. The Vikings improve to 9-5 overall on the season and the Saints drop to 4-4 in 2023.
The Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to get on the board. The scoring began when Jack Sutton hit a single to right field, plating Luke Ballweg and Jack Hines. On the next play, Sutton stole second, allowing Nick Banowetz to add another run for the Vikings. With the bases loaded, Jason Axelberg scored after Ragan Pinnow walked.
In the fifth inning, Pinnow hit a single to left field that cruised past the Saint's third baseman, sending Trevor Winterstein home to score a run. Winterstein reached base on a walk earlier in the inning, stealing second and advancing to third base on the play.
D'Youville scored its lone run of the game in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field.
At the plate, Sutton went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Pinnow went 1-for-2 with one RBI in the win.
Caleb Saari was the starter on the hill for the Vikings, spending six innings in the game and striking out seven batters to move to 3-0 on the season. Saari allowed just two hits during his time on the mound. Gabe Pilla, Tom Sun, Ryan Clementi and Adam Diedrich spent time on the mound in the contest, with Sun logging three strikeouts.
