Viking Hockey Falls to Seawolves in Overtime, 6-5

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana hockey (11-17-3) fell to Alaska Anchorage (12-15-2) Friday night inside Midco Arena in an overtime affair, 6-5. Augustana's power play propelled the Vikings with three goals on four attempts but the Seawolves' offensive opportunities outlasted the Vikings as they claimed their 12th win of the season.

Augustana jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Colton Friesen slotted in his third of the season off a rebounded shot from Simon Falk. Friesen's early first-period goal was cut short as Matt Johnson tied the game less than 30 seconds later with a breakaway opportunity.

UAA continued to pound in the rubber throughout the first period as Connor Merritt potted in a second-chance attempt to take its first lead of the game. The Seawolves carried that momentum into the final minutes of the first period as Matt Kinash carried the puck into the offensive zone and picked the far corner to grab a 3-1 lead.

A late-period penalty on the Seawolves gave Augustana its first power play opportunity of the game and Owen Bohn took the most of the opportunity as the freshman forward received a cross-ice pass from Quinn Rudurd and fired it between the pads of Joey Lamoreaux to cut Alaska Anchorage's lead to one. The Seawolves outshot the Vikings 22-9 in the first period.

Augustana awoke in the second period as Quinn Rudrud got the ball rolling with his fourth of the season on the power play to tie the game at 4-4 with just over five minutes to play in the second frame. Will Howard added his name to the scoresheet 30 seconds later, tipping in the puck off a shot from Anthony Stark

5:33 into the third period, Ben Almquist retied the game with a shot from the top of the circle to make it a 4-4 game. Karter McNarland pushed the Seawolves to their second lead of the game midway through the third period.

A late-period penalty on UAA gave Augustana its fourth power play of the night and the special team's unit answered the bell again as a quick pass between Evan McIntyre and Brett Meerman to Ryan Naumovski led to a top-shelf tying goal to push the game to overtime.

Both teams battled throughout the opening minutes of the extra frame but a wide shot from the Vikings led to a breakaway opportunity for Aiden Westin who potted the winning goal to secure a 6-5 win.
