AU Baseball Sweeps Drury on Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Augustana baseball team went 2-0 on Saturday with wins at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. The Vikings claimed game one by a score of 6-4 then rode Ashton Michek through six shutout innings in a 5-0 game two win.

Game One: Augustana 6, Drury 4
The Vikings opened the scoring in the second inning. Joe Kolbeck reached on a one-out single before Max Mosser was hit by a pitch. Kolbeck wheeled around after the ball was thrown away on a pickoff attempt, and Mosser came in on a Jason Axelberg single to take a 2-0 lead.

Drury went on to score the next four runs for their first lead of the game. The Vikings were able to manufacture a run in the sixth inning to cut the Panther lead in half when Mosser delivered a two-out RBI single to drive in Tate Meiners.

The Vikings completed the comeback in the top of the eighth. Kolbeck singled with two outs to get two on. Mosser and Axelberg delivered again from there, recording back-to-back RBI singles to give AU a 5-4 advantage.

Jack Hines delivered the exclamation point in the ninth inning, sending a solo home run to left for an insurance run, his third home run of the season.

Ethan Cole was lock-down in relief, striking out a pair on two shutout innings to earn the win. Adam Diedrich recorded his first save of the season, facing just three hitters while inducing a double play to cap off the win.

Game Two: Augustana 5, Drury 0
AU got rolling early in game two as Hines and Mosser each tallied RBI singles in the first inning to give the Vikings an early lead.

Nick Banowetz kept it going in the second, scoring Luke Ballweg on an RBI single before Meiners scored on a wild pitch to double the lead at 4-0.

Ashton Michek dominated on the bump for AU, allowing just two hits in six shutout innings while striking out eight on his way to a victory.

Meiners capped the scoring in the seventh, hitting a lead-off home run to put away the Panthers.

Riley Rothschadl turned away any idea of a comeback threat in the seventh, striking out a pair while facing just three batters.

Ballweg led the bats with a pair of hits and a run scored, while Meiners scored a pair of runs and reached base twice.
