WINONA, Minn. - The No. 24 Augustana baseball team earned its NCAA-best ninth shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory over Winona State. The win closed out the fifth weekend sweep for the Vikings and extended their win streak to 10 games.
AU is 27-6 on the season and an NSIC-best 19-4, while the Warriors fall to 13-22, 10-15.
Jack Hines continued his remarkable season, going 4 for 4 with a triple, RBI, and run scored. Three different Vikings reached with a double as
Drey Dirksen,
Max Mosser, and
Tate Meiners each collected one.
Mariano Gomez was dominant yet again as a starter, allowing three hits and walking two while striking out 10 in six innings of work. The game was scoreless until the eighth, allowing
Ethan Cole (4-0) to earn the win. Cole went the final three innings and struck out five while facing just nine hitters.
The Viking bats did all of their damage in that eighth inning. Cole opened it up with a single up the middle before a
Trevor Winterstein single to the opposite field put a pair on with nobody out.
Cole moved to third on a passed ball and Winterstein stole second to get both in scoring position. On a 2-2 count,
Nick Banowetz delivered the tiebreaker, chopping a ground ball over the third baseman to score a pair and give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
After a pitching change,
Jack Hines added insurance with an RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch before a Dirksen double to put AU in front 4-0.
In the final two frames, Cole was electric. He tallied all five of his strikeouts and induced a groundout against the final six batters to secure the victory.
The Vikings return to action Wednesday, traveling to Wayne State for a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
