WAYNE, Neb. - The No. 24 Augustana baseball team earned a pair of impressive victories on the road against Wayne State on Wednesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Complex.
The Vikings, winners of 12 straight, are 29-6 overall and 21-4 in the NSIC. The Wildcats move to 21-14, 16-9.Â
Game One: Augustana 4, Wayne State 1
J.D. Hennen struck out 12 in a seven inning complete game victory to help the Vikings earn a game one victory. Hennen allowed a run on five hits to lift AU.Â
Trevor Winterstein,
Jack Hines, and
Luke Ballweg each registered RBI singles and
Nick Banowetz went 1 for 2 with a hit and a walk.Â
The Vikings pushed three runs across in the third inning.
Tate Meiners was hit by a pitch and Banowetz walked to get a pair on base. Winterstein delivered a single to drive in Meiners and open the scoring.
After a double play moved Banowetz to third, Hines delivered a two-out knock to drive him home. Dirksen walked on five pitches and Ballweg capped off the inning with an RBI single to center.Â
Joe Kolbeck and Meiners were each blunked to lead off the fourth inning. Kolbeck moved to third on a fly out and was able to score on a failed pickoff attempt to put the Vikings up 4-0.Â
After WSC scored a run in the fourth, Hennen cruised. He retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced, including seven via strikeouts, to close out his third win of the season.Â
Game Two: Augustana 10, Wayne State 7
Meiners went 3 for 5 with four RBI while Hines and Dirksen each had a pair of hits to boost the offense in game two.Â
On the mound,
Riley Rothschadl brought stability out of the pen. He allowed just three hits and a run while striking out nine in 5 1/3 innings after entering in the third inning.
Will Henry earned his second save of the season after a scoreless ninth inning.Â
The Vikings strung together a pair of runs in the first inning. Winterstein and
Parker Mooney walked to open the game and Dirksen singled with one out to load the bases. Ballweg singled home Winterstein and Mooney scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by
Sam Siegel to give AU a 2-0 lead.Â
After the Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the first, the Vikings exploded.
Ragan Pinnow singled to lead off the second and Hines put runners on the corners with a two-out single to extend the inning.Â
Dirksen walked to load the bases, Ballweg walked to score Pinnow, and Siegel walked to score Hines and put the AU in front 4-2. Axelberg followed with a single, scoring Ballweg and Dirksen, and Meiners drove him in with Siegel to go ahead 8-2.Â
WSC scored the next four runs to get within two before a two-run blast from Meiners in the seventh inning grew the Viking lead to 10-6.Â
The Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, trailing 10-7, but Henry collected a strikeout and induced a double play to secure the sweep.Â
The Vikings will host Dakota Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon for a 3 p.m. single game.Â
