Vikings Close Regular Season Action At Wayne State With Chance For Conference Supremacy

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 13 Augustana football team (9-1 overall, 8-1 NSIC) closes the regular season with a road game against red-hot Wayne State (6-4, 6-3). With a win, the Vikings would clinch a share of both the South Division and Overall NSIC title.

Seeking History
The Vikings are a single win away from clinching at least a share of the NSIC Championship. A three-peat would put Augustana in elite company, becoming the ninth team in the 93-year history of the NSIC to win three consecutive conference championships.

Scouting the Enemy
The Wildcats are 6-4 on the season and 6-3 in the NSIC but our playing their best football. The Wildcats have won three straight game by an average score of 37-11. Among those is a win over then-No. 9-ranked Minnesota State. The run game has been the strength, combining for 871 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns in the three-game stretch.

They're led by NSIC-leading rusher Dawson Forgy, who has rushed for 1,239 yards and 19 touchdowns on the season.  

Last Time Against Opponent
In a game that saw statistics not matter, the Augustana football team fell at Wayne State, 14-12. With wintery conditions and yard lines not visible, the Wildcats ended the game with 20 yards of offense while AU totaled 289 yards.

The Vikings recorded six tackles for loss in the contest led by Kade Lynott's two for seven yards. Jack Wilson was in on 1.5 of the tackles for loss, totaling 14 yards.

Weekend Rewind
The No. 5-ranked Augustana football team suffered its first loss of the 2025 season last Saturday afternoon, falling 45–21 to No. 16 Minnesota State at Kirkeby-Over Stadium.

Klayton Sattler had five receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown in his first game back in five games. Sam Scholten added three receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown. Rich Lucero Jr. went 18 of 31 for 169 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and Breylon Blount took 15 carries for 73 yards.

Brock Salm led the defense with 12 tackles and a tackle for loss to go with a QB hurry. Wyatt Hamersma had seven tackles and a tackle for loss while Alex Belongia had six tackles and a tackle for loss.

Augustana has played on November 15th nine times in their history, going 4-5 in those games. The Vikings last won on this date in 2014, a 47-3 victory over Southwest Minnesota State.

Josh Larsen, a transfer from South Dakota, has made three starts at left guard and six starts at center. Rich Lucero Jr. has made five starts under center. DJ Page has 10 catches for 140 yards in four games. Neal May, a Minnesota State transfer, 10 catches for 117 yards and 338 return yards. Klayton Sattler has 22 catches for 294 yards and five touchdowns.

Defensively, true freshman Brody Shuss is fourth on the team with 39 tackles, including three tackles for loss. RJ Eckhardt has a sack and two tackles for loss while Ashton Toll has 1.5 sacks to go with 28 tackles.

Vikings in the National Rankings
As a team, The Vikings are 49.6 percent on third down, the 11th best conversion rate in the country. The team's completion percentage (68.7%) is seventh. Augustana has thrown four interceptions, 11th fewest in the country, and had a streak of 216 pass attempts before Oct. 4 against USF. The Vikings have turned the ball over 10 times this season, 14th lowest in DII.

They are scoring 34.8 points per game, 29th in the country. The red zone offense is also extremely efficient, scoring 94.9 percent of red zone possessions, the fourth best mark in the country. The special teams have swarmed the opponents, ranking second with 13.2 kick return yards allowed per return while the return team is 24th, averaging 23.6 yards per return.
