Vikings Drop Second Midweek Game to Washburn

BOX SCORE TOPEKA, Kan. - The Augustana baseball team dropped its second consecutive game at Washburn, this time by a score of 8-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Falley Field. The Vikings move to 9-5 overall, while the Icabods move to 12-9.

Jack Hines had three hits, two RBI and two stolen bases, Jason Axelberg went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored while Sam Siegel added two hits, a walk, a run scored and two RBI. 

Ethan Hoffman allowed three runs in 2 1/3 innings in his Augustana debut to get dealt the loss. Harry Blum threw four innings in relief while allowing two runs while Joel Van De Stroet, Will Henry and Jadon Bast combined to give up three runs in the final 1 2/3 innings. 

Washburn opened the scoring with four runs in the third inning to take an early lead. The Vikings responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to end their scoreless drought.

Axelberg applied initial pressure with a double through the left side to reach second on a full count. Three pitches later, he was able to cross the plate on a Sam Siegel single to right to cut into the Icabod lead. 

Troy Berg followed with a single to put runners on the corners. After a pitching change, Berg went for second to try and draw a throw. His effort was rewarded as he got into second and Siegel was able to score on the throw to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. 

The Vikings chipped again in the seventh when Hines reached on a two-out single and Axelberg drove a 3-1 pitch down the field line for a double to bring Hines home but Washburn answered with an RBI single of their own to grow its lead to 5-3. 

With two outs in the eighth, the Icabods broke the game open with a three-run double to bring their lead to 9-3. 

The Vikings showed fight in the ninth, drawing three straight walks before a two-run single from Hines to open the frame, but would score just one more run to bring the game to its final score. 

The Vikings will have some down time before taking on MSU Denver on Sunday for a doubleheader in Rapid City, S.D., starting at 1 p.m.
