BISMARCK, N.D. - The Augustana men's basketball team closed a perfect road stretch on Saturday night, knocking off UMary 76-41 at the McDowell Activity Center.
The Vikings (12-7, 10-4 NSIC) nearly doubled-up the Marauders (5-15,3-11 NSIC) in field goal percentage, shooting 50 percent (33 for 66) while holding UMary to 26.2 percent (17 of 25). AU outrebounded the Marauders 47-40 while also holding large advantages in points off turnovers (26-10) and in the paint (38-14).Â
It was another 20-point night for
Tameron Ferguson, who added four assists and a career-best nine rebounds while tallying two steals and a block.
Caden Hinker added 14 points and seven rebounds while
Sam Rensch had 13 points and a team-high five assists.Â
UMary held their only lead of the game on their first possession, turning over the Vikings and knocking down a 3-pointer. Rensch evened the score with a 3-pointer of his own, starting a 9-0 run to give the Vikings a 9-3 lead at the 17:12 mark of the first half.Â
After the Marauders hit a 3-pointer to end one run, Rensch began another, this time with a jumper. Ferguson, Hinker and Fried added twos of their own before Ferguson scored four straight to cap a 12-0 run to extend the AU lead to 21-6 at 10:42 left in the half.Â
The Vikings kept pouring it on from there, scoring 12 more points while UMary doubled their score to make it 33-12 at the 7:04 mark. In the final 7:04, UMary outscored AU 7-4 to cut its deficit to 37-19 at the half.Â
Hinker, Rensch and Ferguson opened the second half scoring with 2-pointers to grow the lead to 43-19. Following a Marauder 3-pointer, Hinker hit a jumper,
Amari Westmoreland-Vendiola hit a 3-pointer and Ferguson got another layup to lead 50-22 at the first media timeout of the half.Â
After alternating buckets for just over six minutes of play, Hinker scored five straight points, Helgren got a layup and Rensch hit a jumper to give AU its largest lead of the night at 70-33 with 7:05 to play. UMary outscored the Vikings 13-8 the rest of the game, a stretch highlighted by the first collegiate points for
Jonathan Caicedo, to bring the game to its final score.Â
The Vikings return home next weekend, starting with a Friday contest against Minnesota Duluth. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
