HOUGHTON, Mich. – Leonid Bulgakov broke the Augustana single-season goals record while
Colton Friesen also scored and
Josh Kotai made 36 saves, but Augustana men's hockey fell 3-2 in overtime to Michigan Tech on Friday night during the Huskies' Winter Carnival celebration at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
Michigan Tech struck early before the Vikings answered on the power play, and Augustana built a second-period lead before the Huskies rallied late and secured the win in overtime.
The Huskies opened the scoring just 53 seconds into the contest, but Augustana responded quickly. After drawing an early penalty, Bulgakov evened the game at 3:47 of the opening period, converting a power-play chance off feeds from
Brett Meerman and Friesen. The goal marked Bulgakov's 14th of the season, setting a new Augustana single-season record. The teams skated into the first intermission locked at 1-1.
Augustana grabbed its first lead of the night late in the second period. Friesen finished an even-strength opportunity at 16:32, with
Owen Bohn and
Maxwell Chakrabarti recording assists to give the Vikings a 2-1 edge heading into the break.
Michigan Tech pressed throughout the third period and tied the game at 15:57, sending the contest to overtime. In the extra session, the Huskies ended the night at 2:32, as Max Koskipirtti scored the game-winner to seal the 3-2 decision.
Kotai was strong in net for Augustana, stopping 36 of 39 shots.
