About Mayor's Cup
Each year, Augustana College and the University of Sioux Falls athletic departments will compete head-to-head in sixteen (16) common, equally-weighted sports to determine which school and its fan base can claim bragging rights for that year. The winning school will be awarded the Mayor’s Cup. By placing equal emphasis on all sports, the series helps to build community awareness for less-publicized Olympic sports. The fact that a point from softball counts as much as a point from football helps to keep the rivalry fresh and active for the entire school year, especially in the spring when most of the points are decided and traditional high-interest sports like football and men's basketball have hung up their uniforms for the year. The series focuses on the message that “every game counts” and that the rivalry between the schools is a yearlong affair.
The competition will go beyond the fields of sports and into the classroom and community. A point will be awarded to the athletic department whose student-athletes achieve the higher grade point average. Another point will be awarded to the department that garners the most support from their students, alumni and fans in a year-long blood drive. Cougar and Viking athletics will ask their fans to bleed their school colors in three different blood drive events.
