Storylines• Augustana men's and women's indoor track and field team will continue competition traveling to Mankato, Minn. for the Ted Nelson Classic on Saturday, Feb. 7. The meet will be hosted by Minnesota State.
• The Vikings last competed at the Jack Johnson Invitational this past weekend, while sending another group of athletes to the Wildcat Open on Saturday, Jan. 31.
• At the Wildcat Open,
CJ Ham broke his own school record in the weighted throw and provisionally qualified in two events.
• Both teams were selected by the NSIC coaches to finish in the top-three of the league with the men picked second and the women slotted third.
• The Vikings return several key components to both teams for the 2015 season, including several All-NSIC performers.
• Augustana will be in action next at the SDSU Open on Feb. 13-14 in Brookings, S.D.
Ham breaks his own school record at the Wildcat Open• Augustana's
CJ Ham broke his own school record in the weighted throw and provisionally qualified in two events while six Vikings took home top marks at the 13th annual Wildcat Open on Saturday, Jan. 31 hosted by Wayne State College.
• In his first attempt, Ham broke his own school record taking the top mark in the weight throw provisionally qualifying with a heave of 18.86 meters (61 feet, 10.50 inches).
• Ham also took third in the shot put provisionally qualifying with a throw of 15.78 meters (51 feet, 9.25 inches).
Vikings have strong showing at the Jack Johnson Invitational • The Augustana track and field team sent 22 athletes to the prestigious Jack Johnson Invitational-hosted by the University of Minnesota on Friday and Saturday Jan. 30-31.
• Four Viking women teamed up to take the 4x400-meter relay, provisionally qualifying with a time a 3:52.29 for a fourth-place finish, ranked first in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
• In the men's 200-meter dash,
Justin Greenway finished 12th place clocking a time of 22.75, while taking eighth place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 6.95.
•
Paul Yak took seventh place in the men's 3000-meter run with a time of 8:33.67, while
Keegan Carda placed ninth clocking a time of 8:35.97.
Nathan Hauge also competed in the 3000-meter run provisionally qualifying with a time of 8:24.80. In the men's mile run, Yak recorded a new personal-best with a time of 4:22.33 good for a 12th-place finish.
• In the women's mile run,
Leah Seivert led the way for the Vikings with a time of 5:04.44 for a 13th-place finish.
Cassidy Soli took 24th place clocking a time of 5:14.61.
Emma Anderson (5:16.08) and
Kaitlyn Yoerg (5:16.72) rounded out Augustana, placing 25th and 26th respectively.
The staff• In his 12th season as the head coach,
Tracy Hellman enters 2015 with hopes of another award-filled season.
• Hellman has directed 93 All-Americans in his combined duties of leading the track and field teams as well as the
successful cross country teams.
• With four individual national championships and a relay title in 2012, Hellman has also earned 19 coach of the year
honors, including the 2011 national women's cross country coach of the year after leading his squad to the first national championship in program history.
• Assistant coach
Greg Binstock enters his third season as the lead assistant.
• Directing sprinters and jumpers, Binstock helped Henrik Holmberg to two All-American finishes in multi-events in the 2012-13 season and directed 12 national qualifiers to nine All-American performances.
• Graduate Assistants
Scott Tanis (Distance), and
Laquone Robinson (Hurdles) round out the coaching staff.
