Augustana's Melissa Barella places ninth after day two of the NSIC Heptathlon

ABERDEEN, S.D. - Augustana College sophomore Melissa Barella took part in the women's heptathlon at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship on Sunday and Monday finishing ninth with 3,928 points in the women's heptathlon.

On Sunday, Barella sat at 11th place with a score of 2,430 points after cruising in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.95, followed by a clearance of 1.53 meter (5 feet, 0.25 inches) in the high jump. The Centennial, Colo. native rounded out her day one action with a heave of 7.77 meters (25 feet, 6 inches) in the shot put and finished with a mark of 27.51 in the 200-meter dash.

Barella opened day two at the conference championships in the long jump with a clearance of 4.73 meters followed by a heave of 21.03 meters in the javelin throw. Closing out the day, the sophomore competed in the 800-meter run where she recorded a time of 2:29.22 to finish ninth overall.

The University of Sioux Falls Katlyn Sawtelle won the NSIC Heptathlon with 5,049 points.

The Vikings are back in action in Sioux Falls this weekend as they will compete in the Howard Wood Relays on May 1-2 at Howard Wood Field.
