Women’s 4x400 headlines day two at the Howard Wood Relays

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The women's 4x400 meter relay and Kayla Mescher both ran provisional qualifying times and set new school records on day two of the Howard Wood Relays, the final regular-season meet of the 2015 season.

"We had a great performance this weekend in our final tune up before the conference championships," head coach Tracy Hellman said.

In the women's 4x400 meter relays, Mescher, Anne Parsley, Charissa Etrheim, and Carina Hofmeister set a new school record and hit a provisional mark with a time of 3:43.65 to take second-place.

"Our women's 4x400 meter relay squad was the headline of the weekend," Hellman said. "Not only did they break the school record, but they put up a time that should get them to the NCAA Championships."

Mescher hit the provisional standard earlier in the season, but the senior from Brighton, Colo. improved that mark taking first in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.54 which ranks first in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and 10th in the nation.

The men's squad of Chris Sharpe, Jeremy Botzet, Thomas Sittig, and Khor Kong took third in the men's 4x400 meter relays with a new personal-best time of 3:18.80.

Emma Anderson took eighth in the women's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:46.70, while Austin Krohnke ran a personal-best in the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:04.68.

Ryan Heuer took second in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 53.30 second. The Fairmont, Minn. native also competed in the 110-meter hurdles with a fourth-place finish clocking a time of 15.15 seconds.

In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Calliann Brunswig followed Heuer's performance with a personal-best of her own clocking a 14.93-second run to take third.

Justin Greenway took second in the long jump with a clearance of 6.56 meters (21 feet, 6.25 inches). Brunswig took fourth in the women's long jump with a personal-best clearance of 5.61 meters (18 feet, 5 inches).

Senior CJ Ham dominated the shot put with a heave of 15.65 meters (51 feet, 4.25 inches) to take third-place overall.

"We had a lot of great sharpening races from everyone and we are excited for the championship season, which begins next Friday," Hellman said.

The Vikings now prepare for the NSIC Championships, hosted by the University of Sioux Falls next weekend on Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9.
