Track & Field: Montez Brown wins the NSIC Pentathlon

MANKATO, Minn. – Augustana track & field member Olivia Montez Brown won the NSIC Pentathlon as the 2016 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championship got underway in Mankato on Sunday.

Montez Brown finished with 3641 points, 92 points ahead of second place Molly McDonald from University of Mary. The score is an NCAA provisional qualifier and a new personal best for Montez Brown.

Olivia started out strong winning the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.85. She would go on to tie for third in the high jump clearing the bar at 1.59 meters (Five feet, two inches). Montez Brown came in fourth in the shot put with a throw of 10.57 meters (34 feet, eight inches).  

Oliva then went to take first in the long jump with a jump of 5.55 meters (18 feet, two inches). In the final event, the 800 meters run, Montez Brown came in ninth crossing the line with a time of 2:29.90.

Melissa Barella finished in 12th with a score of 3034. The score was a new personal best of Barella.

"We are excited about the start of the NSIC Championship," assistant coach Greg Binstock said. "Both Olivia and Melissa had personal best. Lets hope this is sign of things to come."

Augustana finishes up the regular season next weekend with the Nebraska Tune-Up and the SDSU Tune-Up.
