BROOKINGS, S.D. - Most freshmen have jitters in their first collegiate race, but
Callie DeWitt put on a show at the SDSU Preseason Open at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, S.D. on Friday night.
DeWitt went on to have top-five finishes in three events and break a school record in her first collegiate race. DeWitt started off with a time of 7.75 in the 60-meters, breaking the school record of 7.78 set by Bobbi Jo Buyck (2007). DeWitt finished fifth in the finals with a time of 7.76 and
Alaina Klapperich finished in eighth with a personal best time of 7.87.
DeWitt also went on to take fourth in the 200-meters and the long jump. In the 200-meters, DeWitt finished with a time of 26.05, followed closely behind by fellow freshman
Selin Dikmen who finished in fifth with a time of 26.10. In the long jump, DeWitt led a trio of Viking top-10 finishers with a mark of 5.28-meters.
Sara Heyn finished in eighth with a mark of 5.04-meters and
Sarah Westerman went 5.01-meters, finishing in 10th.
"We had a great team performance this evening," coach
Greg Binstock said of Friday's performance. "Looking back over the years I feel this was our best December meet. We had a strong fall training session so it's nice to get out and compete like we did."
In other field events, senior
Anthony Huber and freshman
Kendra Ludeman had good starts to their seasons. Huber finished in seventh in the weight throw with a personal best and provisionally qualifying mark of 17.77-meters. Ludeman went 1.55-meters in the high jump to take fifth in her collegiate debut.
In the men's 60-meter hurdles,
Paul Meloche finished in third with a time of 8.33 and
Dylon Van't Hof placed sixth. Van't Hof set a personal record in the qualifying with a time of 8.36. In the women's race
Valerie Gildemaster set a personal high in her fourth place finish with a time of 8.88 and Dikmen took seventh with a time of 9.12.
Gildemaster also had a top-10 finish in the 400-meters with a time of 59.09, taking eighth.
Logan Hayek finished in 10th in her collegiate debut with a time of 59.47.
Also in mid-distance, the Vikings had a quartet of runners place in the top-10 in the men's 600-meters.
Josh Barrows led the way taking third, followed by
Zach Tuschen (sixth),
Beau Ireland (eighth) and
Nick Reiffenberger (ninth). Ireland and Reiffenberger set personal bests.
The Vikings will have a month break before getting into the full swing of the indoor season. Augustana returns to action on Jan. 12 for the MSU Open in Mankato, Minn.
