Montez Brown Repeats as NSIC Pentathlon Champion

MANKATO, Minn. – Sophomore Olivia Montez Brown defended her NSIC Indoor Pentathlon title on Sunday in Mankato, Minn. Montez Brown set a personal best in the pentathlon with 3,838 points and increased her provisional qualifying mark.

Montez Brown earns 10 points toward Augustana's team score when the NSIC Indoor Championships begin in two weeks. Montez Brown blew out the field by winning by 254 points ahead of Wakpor Ighovojah of the Concordia-St. Paul.

"It was a good day," coach Greg Binstock said of Montez Brown's performance on Sunday. "Our goal was those 10 points for the conference championship. It was great to see her PR in the hurdles, which set her up for the rest of the day."

Montez Brown started the day off with a personal best time in the 60-meter hurdles, good for first in the event. Montez Brown finished with a time of 8.62, which ranks third in Division II.

Montez Brown also finished first in the long jump with a leap of 19-01.5. Her mark was one inch off of her school record mark she set earlier this season.

Montez Brown finished tied for second in the high jump, tied for third in the shot put and fourth in the 800-meters to cap off her pentathlon title.

After day one of the heptathlon, Peter Schukking ranks ninth with 2,548 points and Alex Woods is in 10th with 2,493 points.

Shukking and Woods will conclude the heptathlon tomorrow, Feb. 13, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Myers Field House in Mankato, Minn.
