Baseball earns first win of the season as they split Friday nights doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific

WAIPAHU, Hawaii - Augustana earned their first win of the season in game two of the doubleheader. After a slow start in game one, the Viking bats erupted for 11 runs in game two as Augustana was able to hold off Hawaii Pacific for an 11-9 game two victory.

GAME ONE

Augustana scored quickly in game one when Dalton Lehnen singled to advance Alex Beals to third. Beals then came around to score on throwing error by the shortstop.

Hawaii Pacific picked up two runs in the bottom of the fourth but the Vikings would tie the game at two in the fifth. Senior Patrick O'Donnell connected on a double down the left field line for his first RBI of the season scoring Zach Dibble.

Two innings later the Vikings regained the lead when Beals hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Dibble to score. Hawaii Pacific went on to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead. The Vikings were unable to get any men on base in the ninth and fell to the Sharks 5-3.

GAME TWO

For the first time in Hawaii, the Viking offense found their groove as they exploded for a season-high, 11-runs.

There was no score heading into the third inning until James drives in Baier on a groundout for the game's first run. Later in the inning, Lucas Wilber scored Dibble on a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Vikings an early 2-0 lead.

After the Sharks pulled to within a run in the fourth, the Vikings erupted in the fifth. O'Donnell started the scoring off with a double down the left field line that scored Wilber and James. O'Donnell later scored on a wild pitch. The Vikings final run of the inning was scored by Ford Schroeder, who scored as Kris Ashland reached base on a throwing error by HPU's shortstop. Hawaii Pacific scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-3 Vikings.

In the final inning of the game, Augustana was able to pick up five important insurance runs. O'Donnell scored the first run of the inning when Wevik singled to left. Trent Herman earned a bases loaded walk to score Alex Beals and Schroeder scored on a Lucas Barry sac fly to right. The final two runs of the inning were driven in by James who doubled to right field scoring Herman and Wevik.

All five runs proved to be important as Hawaii Pacific scored six runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. The Vikings were able to hold on for an 11-9 victory, there first of the season.
