SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana baseball split Saturday's doubleheader with Minnesota Crookston. The Vikings took game one by a score of 8-5 but dropped game two to the Golden Eagles 10-8.
Game One
In the opening game of the series, Augustana made sure they struck first against Minnesota Crookston. The Vikings picked up a first inning run off the bat of
Patrick O'Donnell who tripled down the right field line to score
Sam Baier who reached on a single.
In the second inning, the Vikings added a second run.
Lucas Barry reached on a fielder choice and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later
Jacob James drove in Barry with a single to left to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
Minnesota Crookston cut into the Vikings lead in the fourth inning. After a single and a balk advanced Reed Hjelle to second, he then scored on a single from James Cullinane.
Just a half inning later and the Vikings regained their two-run advantage. After James led off the fifth with a single down the left field line, Baier drove double to left center to score James from first and make 3-1 Augustana.
The Vikings really got the bats going in the final frame of game one, erupting for five runs. James got things going in the seventh with a bunt single before advancing to second on an error. After stealing third, Baier drove him in with a double to left. After two wild pitches, Baier made it 6-1 Vikings. Later in the inning Field tripled to score O'Donnell before later scoring on a
Ryan Menssen double to make it 8-1 Augustana.
The insurance runs in the top of the seventh proved to be important as Minnesota Crookston nearly completed a comeback. The Golden Eagles scored four runs in their final at-bat of the game but it wasn't enough as Augustana held on for an 8-5 victory in the first game of the series.

Game Two
After no score in the first inning, the Vikings put two runs on the scoreboard in the second.
Ryan Menssen got the scoring going with a solo shot to left field. Later in the inning,
Zach Dibble singled to center scoring
Carter Wevik who was hit by a pitch to reach base.
The Vikings lead didn't last as UMC scored two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game. After a scoreless fourth inning, UMC scored two in the fifth, five in the sixth and one in the seventh to take a 10-2 lead.
Augustana cut into their deficit in the eighth when Menssen drove in
Kris Ashland on a groundout. They scored again when
Zach Reeg, who singled to left earlier in the inning, scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-4 UMC.
The Vikings scored four in the top of the ninth, highlighted by O'Donnell's 3-run home run, but were unable to draw any closer, falling to the Golden Eagles 10-8 in game two.
