BROOKINGS, S.D. - Josh Barrows had to wait around most of the day for his race, but when his time came he showed up big at the DII Invitational in Brookings, S.D. on Friday.
Barrows went out and took first in the 1000-meters with a personal best time of 2:28.20, which broke the meet record. The previous meet record was set last year by Jacob Green with a time of 2:33.59 and Barrows shattered it by five seconds. Barrows just missed the facility record set by Jay Welp (2:27.20, 2015) by one second.
Zach Tuschen was with Barrows the entire race and finished in third with a time of 2:33.65.
"Today was a good step forward as we continue to build into the indoor season," assistant coach
Scott Tanis said of Friday's performance. "We still have plenty of work to do over the next several weeks but had a lot of positive performances for this time of year."
The Vikings had a pair of second place finishers in the 60-meter hurdles.
Valerie Gildemaster had a strong showing and hit a provisionally qualifying time with 8.77.
Paul Meloche kept his strong season going with a time of 8.29 and has finished in the top-three in each 60-meter hurdle race this year.
In other mid-distance races,
Emily Tromp recorded a personal best and first place finish in the 600-meters with a time of 1:36.7.
Carly Rahn took third in her first collegiate indoor race and
Cassidy Soli finished in sixth. In the men's 600-meters,
Austin Miller took fifth and
Austin Krohnke finished in seventh. In the men's 400-meters,
Ryan Stiles recorded a personal record time of 50.76 and finished in ninth.
In field events,
Anthony Huber recorded a provisionally qualifying mark for the third consecutive meet in the weight throw. Huber took fourth with a mark of 17.66-meters.
Callie DeWitt and
Kendra Ludeman continued to impress during their freshman campaigns with each taking second in their respective events. DeWitt recorded a jump of 5.19-meters in the long jump to finish in second and Ludeman went 1.60-meters in the high jump to also take second.
Next weekend Augustana makes a return trip to Mankato, Minn. for its first two-day meet of the season at the MSU Open.
