DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa brings out the best in student-athletes and Friday was twice as nice for the Augustana track and field team. The Vikings came away with two relay victories and school records on day two of the Drake Relays.
The women's 4x800-meter relay team got the day started with a school record performance. The team of
Cassidy Soli,
Carly Rahn,
Avery Selberg and
Emily Tromp raced at a school record time of 8:58.53 to take first in the college division. The men's 4x800-meter team of
Zach Tuschen,
Austin Miller,
Austin Krohnke and
Josh Barrows finished in second with a time of 7:35.45.
The next Viking relay win came in the last relay of the day as the women's Sprint Medley team was victorious. The team of
Selin Dikmen,
Callie DeWitt,
Valerie (Moos) Gildemaster and
Carly Rahn raced to a time of 4:01.66 to set a new school record and to win the college division. The men's Sprint Medley team of
Paul Meloche,
Alex Woods,
Ryan Stiles and
Josh Barrows finished in 12th in the college division with a time of 3:32.49.
"The Drake Relays is always a special meet for our program," coach
Tracy Hellman said of the Drake Relays. "We've had a rich history at this meet and it was very exciting to see us add to that history. The women's 4x800 and sprint medley both cane away victorious and it was a great team effort by everyone in the relays. We had some other relays that ran really tough and just came up short. This meet always brings out the best in our athletes! I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings!"
Also at the Drake Relays, senior
Peter Schukking set a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 51.15-meters, which was good for 21st.
INDIANOLA, Iowa - Augustana track and field was also competing at the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa on Friday. The Vikings took home 12 top-eight finishes and one win on Friday.
Two days after setting the school record in the discus,
Anthony Huber finished just shot of that mark but still took first in the discus. Huber finished in the top spot with a mark of 53.36-meters. In other field events,
Josh Reider finished in seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 12.41-meters.
In the women's 5000-meters,
Courtney Hottovy,
Claire Boersma and
Nicolette Schmidt recorded top-five finishes in personal record times. Hottovy finished in second with a time of 17:38.50, Boersma took third with a time of 17:39.20 and Schmidt raced to a fifth place finish in a time of 17:54.77. In the men's 5000-meters,
Logan Burns (third),
Jesus Urtusuastegui (fourth) and
Aaron Runge (seventh) finished in the top-eight of the race and Urtusuastegui and Runge ran personal record times.

Alaina Klapperich took home a second place finish in the 100-meters with a time of 12.40. In hurdles, Dikmen finished in seventh in the 100-meter hurdles and
Evan Ward took sixth in the 400-meter hurdles.
Sydney Mudgett finished in seventh in the 400-meters with a time of 1:00.18.
The Vikings return to Des Moines for day three of the Drake Relays tomorrow to conclude the meet.
