MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Augustana track and field team opened its outdoor season with a solid outing at the MIAA vs. NSIC Showdown in Maryville, Mo. on Thursday. Four Vikings earned top finishes and Augustana had 22 top-five finishes.
Callie DeWitt,
Josh Barrows,
Nathan Schroeder and
Carly Rahn each took home victories in their first outdoor meets of the season.
"It was a great outdoor opener for both teams today," coach
Tracy Hellman said of his squad. "We had many personal bests and I felt we competed admirably. This was an outstanding start to the season and we look forward to our next opportunity."
DeWitt won the 100-meters with a time of 12.16. DeWitt also took second in the 200-meters with a time of 25.56 and finished in third in the long jump with a mark of 5.40-meters in her first collegiate outdoor meet.
Barrows picked up where he left off last outdoor season. Last year, Barrows qualified for the national meet in the 400-meter hurdles and on Thursday won the event in Maryville. Barrows won with a time of 54.39.
Schroeder, who was an All-NSIC and All-Region honor in the 3000-meter steeplechase, took first in the event on Thursday with a time of 9:40.29. The Vikings claimed the top-three spots in the event with
Sean Heaton taking second and
Skylar DeJong taking third. Heaton notched a personal best time of 9:40.29 and DeJong raced to a time of 9:42.54.
Rahn took home the 800-meter title, but by the slimmest of margins. Rahn and teammate
Emily Tromp crossed the finish line only 0.01 seconds apart with Rahn finishing in 2:14.26 and Tromp finishing with 2:14.27.
Avery Selberg was also a high finisher for the Vikings, taking sixth with a time of 2:19.02.
In other hurdles events,
Valerie (Moos) Gildemaster took home a pair of second place finishes. The reigning national qualifier, took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.13. She also took second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.63.
Paul Meloche also took second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.11.
In mid-distance races,
Mackenzie Kelly led a pack of Vikings in the 1500-meters with a second place finish.
Alana Sesow (third),
Claire Boersma (fifth) and
Leah Seivert (sixth) rounding out the pack. In the men's 1500-meters,
Wyatt McLeod took third and
Austin Miller finished in sixth. In the men's 800-meters,
Austin Krohnke placed in third and
Zach Tuschen finished right behind him in fourth.
In field events,
Anthony Huber finished in the top-six in a trio of events. Huber took fifth in the shot put and hammer throw and finished in sixth in the discus. In the triple jump,
Coley Stoller finished in second in the women's event and
Josh Reider took sixth in the men's event.
Peter Schukking placed in fourth in the javelin.
Next up for Augustana will be the Sioux City Relays in Sioux City, Iowa on Friday and Saturday, April 13-14 hosted by Morningside College.
