MARSHALL, Minn. – Following a decisive win over MSU Moorhead on Thursday, the Augustana wrestling team kept it rolling with another one on Saturday as the Vikings upended Southwest Minnesota State 28-9 at the PE Gym in Marshall, Minn.
The win boosts the Vikings to 3-1 on the season overall and to 2-1 in Northern Sun Conference action, while the Mustangs fall to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Ethan Cota got the things started with a 13-0 major decision win at 125 lbs., to even his record at 13-13 and stake the Vikings to a 4-0 lead. The lead increased to 7-0 with a 4-0 decision from
Brayden Curry at 133 lbs. He moved to 6-13.
SMSU got their first individual points at 141 lbs., but it mattered little, as
Jebben Keyes still came out on top, improving to 14-10 in the process, with his seventh pin of the season, which gave Augustana a 13-0 lead.
SMSU got on the board with a pin of their own at 149 lbs., and then got three more with a decision at 157 lbs., to cut the Augie lead to 13-9, but
Jackson Sweeney stemmed the tide at 165 lbs., hanging on for a 6-4 decision to increase the Augie lead to 16-9. His seventh straight win boosts his record to 13-5 this season.
Dylan Schuck saw his first action in a while, and made the most of it with a 6-1 decision at 174 lbs., to increase the Vikings lead to 19-9, and even his record at 8-8.
Undefeated in duals at 174 lbs. with a 3-0 record,
Lukas Poloncic wrestled up at 184 lbs., with the same results, earning a 6-0 decision for his seventh straight win, which gives him an 11-7 record and the Vikings a 22-9 lead that secured a road win.
The winner of the dual already determined, the Vikings kept their foot on the gas, getting an 8-3 decision from
Clayton Wahlstrom at 197 lbs., to grow the lead to 25-9 and move him to 22-11 on the season overall and a perfect 3-0 in duals.
Just for good measure,
Matt Naig used a takedown with less than 10 seconds left in the match to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 win. His first dual win of the season moves him to 7-9 on the season and delivered the final score of 28-9
The Vikings head home with another comfortable win, a three-match winning streak and a two-match homestand in front of them, starting with Upper Iowa next Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m., before hosting Minnesota State on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
